Time for a contest
Aug. 6th, 2009 12:04 pmI have these Mahtowa discs, a bunch of them even, that have a live version of Pine City Motel Blues. I intend to record it sometime soon for release on the Fump, but for now this is one of only two places you can get it (the other being one of the Marscon discs).
This is going to be completely subjective. I'm going to post a quote from WSPA-3 from this last weekend. The first person who can explain just what she was talking about, and the person who comes up with the funniest (IMNSHO) interpretation will both win a copy of this CD.
So, she said
"Why is there bread in your sandwich?"
Comments are screened.
edit The actual reason has been guessed, but funniness can still win you one of these.

Mahtowa this weekend
Jul. 29th, 2009 04:10 pmI'm heading to Mahtowa Friday for a weekend of music and fun. I just finished one of the songs I'll be entering in the songwriters contest. I'm not sure what the other one will be, but probably Don't Go Home, just cause.
If you want to know where to find me, well, Mahtowa is just south of Duluth MN and just off of I-35. If you want to narrow it down a little, it's simple ...

The red finger is pointing to where I usually camp. Look for a big red and white tent. The blue finger is pointing to where the festival is held. I'll be there the entire time, except when sleeping or having breakfast, or being dragged somewhere by the WSPA.

Mahtowa in two weeks
Jul. 15th, 2009 02:16 pmYes indeed, my favorite little festival is coming up soon.
The Highway 61 Folks Festival
Everything is free, there is free camping (albeit a tiny bit rough, no showers or anything, just a big open field) Admission to the festival is free. There is music Friday and Saturday night, also free. And the songwriting contest all afternoon Saturday.
This year the WSPA will be out in our full glory, and indeed I will once again be in the contest. There are usually about 25 contestants, I hope to come in in the lower 30s somewhere.
So come out and hang out with me that weekend. It's gonna be fun ... I guarantee it. Otherwise your money back.

It's getting near that time
Jul. 29th, 2008 12:15 pmThis weekend is Mahtowa
Just a couple hours north of the twin cities ... free camping, great music, much fun, even if I'm going to be there.
And Labor Day weekend is DMSFS's Semi Annual Constitutional Convention (SACC)
This happens on a farm about an hour north of Des Moines. There is camping, food, the Mock Scottish Games, music, movies and too much fun. All that is asked is that you contribute to the food and the fun. There will be info about it up on the DMSFS site soon. Come on down and hang out with the geeks.
edit And if it is any incentive, the entire WSPA will be in attendance at SACC

I talk about this every year, and so far only two people I know have ever showed up.
... I repeat ... that I am at every year is in Mahtowa MN
Once again I am in the songwriting contest. I have no idea what I am going to do, since I haven't written much of anything new in the last year, but I will come up with something.
But that aside, there is free camping, good food, amazing music, and SO MUCH FUN !!!
So come this year. And if you do make sure you get there Friday night to see the amazing Charlie Parr

Ok ... Mahtowa ... the quick report
Aug. 5th, 2007 09:42 pmThe translation of the voice post didn't make a lot of sense ... but it was darn funny. I need to send that out to my email list.
The festival was amazing. Neither Isaac nor I finished in the top 3. The songs that did really deserved it. Shannon Murray won for the 2nd year in a row (more on that in the full length report) and it was well deserved.
I'm tired, but very happy. My songs went well, and I played a LOT of music this weekend.
Now I go collapse.

I am off to Mahtowa Friday morning. If I haven't mentioned it before, I thought I would now.
As always I cannot recommend it more highly. If you like great singer/songwriter stuff, the songwriting competition is always amazing.
I do have a dilemma.
I was working on a new song just for the competition. I am going to do the other new song that I have put in the set recently, but I need a second song, and the song for the festival is just not going to get done. So, here is a listing of what I have done before
2002 - A Correction
Caution: Product Might Be Hot
Bang My Bald Spot
2003
Hey Dad
??? (I think it may have been Don't Go Home)
2004
Standards
Pine City Motel Blues
2005
In Crosby Park
How Can I Miss You?
2006
Ghosts
Mahtowa Blues
2007
Woman Like You
???
So, what song do you think I should pull out for this year?

The first Mahtowa report
Sep. 25th, 2006 04:26 pmIt showed up here for a few minutes, but I dated it the way it should be (and re-wrote some things to protect the innocent)
If you are at all interested you can find my first report from Mahtowa here

Finally, the report from Mahtowa
( I haven't started writing it, and I know it's long, so I went ahead and put in the cut tag )
