The weekend
Mar. 2nd, 2010 03:27 pmI take off for Minneapolis Thursday sometime. Thursday evening I go to my 2nd favorite place to eat, Everest On Grand, then off to see The English Beat and Fishbone at the Cabooze. I sleep till I get up Friday, then off to the con to drop off gear and hang out. Dinner with everyone whenever that happens (6ish?) then concerts. Saturday morning, see Friday morning. Then more concerts, dinner, a dash back to my friends house for a nap, then back for most concerts and of course ... TOYBOAT live in a room. 1334 that is. Midnight. Come to the show to find out why that room number is so funny to me.
Marscon, the long form
Mar. 12th, 2009 02:05 pmI shoulda taken notes. I shoulda taken my laptop to the concerts with me. But I didn't, so I pulled the names of everyone I saw off the website (in the order they were on the website) and now I'll make some comments that are perhaps a little lacking in specifics.
( Cut tagged for your protection )
I know I am missing something. Please make fun of me if you can think of something I am missing

The weekend ... in a nutshell
Mar. 8th, 2009 11:09 pmMarscon was great although I am now pretty ill. I hope that I didn't spread it to anyone else.
The mainstage concerts were all great. Our show last night was maybe the best show we have done. I was silly and when I got back to Ames today, rather than heading home and going to bed, I went to see Watchmen instead. One word, brilliant.
I'll have more words on everything tomorrow (or so)

Capricon: The short form
Feb. 23rd, 2009 09:10 pmThe bad stuff (let's get rid of that first)
Nervousness over my first show in awhile (which led to me being a basket case much of Thursday and Friday)
Bronchitis (which sent me to bed most of the day Saturday)
A dead radio station (may it live again)
The good stuff
As mentioned before, my show with the ever so lovely and talented
sweetmusic_27.
Howling Boat (or Toy Beagle) pulling a show out of our ... ummm, doing a show on the fly to fill in time. The 4 of us had never played those songs before, and I think we were pretty darn good.
TWO
filkertom shows, both different, both brilliant
Two visits to my favorite holy place
YUMMY indian food with good friends Saturday evening (at which point I started feeling better)
sweetmusic_27's solo show ... I had no idea you could sing like that
tollers's solo show ... But I already knew you could sing like that
harperjen's solo show ... see above
The three folks mentioned above and their show Saturday night, I only saw a bit, but man it was good.
Being able to play with my band in a couple different contexts.
Some nifty news that a few of you have heard, and that hopefully if it comes off a lot more of you will hear toward the end of the year (hey, I gotta be vague sometimes)
It was very much a hot and cold weekend. Much of it was pretty bad, but in the end the high points far outweighed the bad parts.
And I am back to the Chicago area this weekend for Toyboat practice, then off to Marscon the following weekend for a Toyboat show in a small room ... it's gonna be ugly folks.

Home again ...
Mar. 2nd, 2008 10:22 pmOnly a 5 1/2 hour drive ... for a 3 hour drive.
The weather turned nasty about Mason City ... I'm tired ... the car is unloaded, WSPA-2 has been returned to his mother's house ... I got some of what may be bad news, we'll see.
The weekend was amazing. To all the musicians and especially all the fans ... thank you so much. As always Marscon is the best gig of the year. I'll write more tomorrow.

Marscon or bust
Feb. 29th, 2008 08:57 amAfter last year, hopefully not bust.
Weather looks good, roads look good, we're about to load up the car.
If the roads are as good as they seem, ETA 1pm or thereabouts.
If anything comes up weather or road wise, DJ Particle and Luke both have my cel number.
As Flounder once said ... "THIS IS GONNA BE GREAT !!!"

The final mix ...
Feb. 28th, 2008 11:00 am... sounds amazing, or at least as amazing as anything can sound with me playing all the instruments. My co-conspirator 's contributions are loud and clear, and WAY funnier than anything I am doing in the song. Oh, and it will be on The Fump April 8th.
And no, I am not going to tell you anything else about it till after my Marscon set.

I had this idea
Feb. 23rd, 2008 06:50 pmAnd I really had no idea if I could pull it off.
I'm not going to say what it is, but it will be the last song of my set at Marscon.
It will HURT certain people. (but in a good way)
My two co-consipirators have my eternal thanks. One in particular ... I will talk more about it when the track is revealed ... but ... YOU MADE THE FRIGGIN TRACK !!!

Just to be mean
Jan. 30th, 2008 10:11 amI'm working on a really nifty cover version for Marscon, probably my most twisted yet.
Really, you are not going to want to miss this one ... and no, I'm not going to tell you anything else about it, cept that it will feature a very special cameo ...

This includes two Eric rarities, the as of yet unreleased Pine City Motel Blues (this is the best version of it I have done so far) and the cover of The Konami Code that
wormquartet and I committed. Apparently it made
darknes fold in half.
