Nowhere to go play tonight. I'm going to get to bed at a reasonable time on a sunday night. My brain and body may not be able to cope with this.

It was an astounding night. I got there about 9 and the place was packed. I managed to get the last available table to camp out at for the evening, and it was an amazing evening.

The musicians really stepped it up tonight. Everyone was great. I talked to one of the other local singer/songwriters about trying to gather up a bunch of folks to do shows together and it looks like that will happen.

What I played

WYSIWYG
Golden Age Of Silicon
Hides

I didn't do the intro for Hides, just went right into the verse. It wasn't the best version I have played, but it was still wonderful. I spaced on the banter on WYSYWYG, but still got through it, and Silicon was a great version.

I will miss the place. Pete did say that there was a chance that someone may buy it and keep it as is, so I am hoping.

It's 1 in the morning, and I have to go to work tomorrow. I don't think I will make it on time though.

More later, including some photos.

I'm heading over the shortly. This is going to be hard. This has been my practice space for 7 1/2 years. I have seen amazing music, and for an open mike, the suck ratio has been astoundingly low. And, it's going to be another bar with TVs up on the wall, just what this town needs, another place for moronic drunken frat boys.

I know what I'm playing, at least I do now, this may change. And I will post more later tonight when I get back.

2nd to last

First, it was a fun drive over to Boheme. It's slippery and cold out. I was driving along on a slightly winding street, going a little under the speed limit, since it was, as I mentioned, slippery out, especially on this street, which tends to be nasty even when it's just wet. I was in the left hand lane, since I was going to turn left at the top of the hill I was on. I see a guy speeding up behind me, who then cuts to my right to go around me. He was probably doing 40. The road curved, he didn't. He slid right into the wall on his right. Not too hard, but enough to raise his insurance premiums I'm sure.

It was a rough crowd tonight, but I won them over by the end of the set.

Bang My Bald Spot
Ghosts
Low Self Esteem
Nice Guys

There were several folks who really got into it, including a wonderful nasty chuckle near the end of Low Self Esteem from a young woman on the couch to the left of the stage. It was perfect.

Next weekend is it ... I know what I'm playing, but what do you think I should play at my last ever set at my favorite place to play? Especially, what should be my last song at Boheme?

2 more

It was a good night at Boheme tonight, the place was packed, and folks were there to listen.

Trophy Wife - the best response I think I have ever had to this song
Only Coffee House In Town - probably a bad choice, I should have followed TW with
Standards
How Can I Miss You?

I played well, my hands did ok. I have been playing more acoustic and less electric guitar the last week or so. I need to do that more.

But ... only two more open mikes at Boheme ... then it's gone ... apparantly it's going to be a pool hall ... it'll probably have TVs showing sports too ...
ericcoleman: (Default)
Color Of Your Eyes
In Crosby Park
Marilyn Monroe (Dan Bern)
Bang My Bald Spot

I had someone in the audience say they used to have my CD, so I asked them why, They had one of the old ones and the label came off. First time I have heard of one of them doing that. So I replaced it, and gave him the new one too, cause I felt bad.

There are indeed just a couple more Boheme open mike nights. It's closing soon. I'm very upset about this, it has been a big part of my life for more than 7 years now.

First of all bad news. I hear that Boheme is closing in December. It has been a big part of my life for the last 7 years, and I don't know what I'll do. I will miss the place horribly.

I asked the audience what fret I should capo at. In case you don't know capo is musician for "can only play in one key".

Someone said 6th fret, I have no songs capo'ed at the 6th fret, so the next person said 4 and I went from there.

Woman I Want - 4th Fret
Product Might Be Hot - 3rd Fret (since someone called that out)
Standards - 2nd Fret (since it was a theme by then)
Nice Guys - 1st Fret
Low Self Esteem - No Capo

It was a storming good set, the best Boheme set in ages. And I talked to some folks who do a music evening every so often. I am so there.
ericcoleman: (Default)
Three songs, one a request, for which I played the wrong song

Only Coffee House In Town
Need (he really wanted Home Again)
Hey Dad (which continues to flop at Boheme, the audience is just too young I think)

A good night, although Need was a little shaky, the other two went very well. A good end to a very frustrating and exhausting weekend.
ericcoleman: (Default)
I was much better this week ... although I am still amused about last week.

I did a safety set, but I needed it. I think I am hitting my stride again after feeling like I have been a bit off for a couple months.

Low Self Esteem
Standards (did it right this time)
How Can I Miss You?
Nice Guys

Had a great response. People listened and applauded and everything.

The rest of the weekend was great. Did a movie night with the WSPA and some friends. Went on the Boone Scenic Valley Railway today.

I'm going to go collapse now.
ericcoleman: (Default)
I went to Boheme tonight ... this after Pythonacon and 600+ miles of driving through the weekend and little sleep and too damn much playing the drums. I'm a little out of it.

Standards - the extended dance mix version. I got lost going into the 3rd verse. I eventually found my way back to it. It took me a bit though. I did the bit with trying to find the harmonic at the end of the 2nd verse ... it made me laugh, the audience not so much.
In Crosby Park - which seemed to be the best received of the three songs, that seems to be the norm for middle songs at Boheme lately.
Bang My Bald Spot - Very low key. Once again, it made me laugh, the rest of the folks there, not so much. They applauded quite a bit though

Oh, and the audience at Boheme makes me feel old. Or like a lech ... maybe both. I'm a bad person. It's filled with the sort of young women who, if I was a 100 years younger, I would be very upset that they wouldn't want to go out with me ...

So how was your weekend ???

Boheme ...

I did an all serious set tonight, much to the dismay of a couple of folks (one woman sitting at the side of the stage was quite upset, in a fairly silly way)

Ghosts - A pretty good version, a little shaky though
Need - Quieted the audience down, and seemed to go down very very well.
Home Again - I was tuned down a half step for this, since that was the way I ended up doing it for the CD. I went out of tune and had to stop the intro and retune, since it was painful. After that it went very well, a couple of guitar bobbles, since I couldn't see well, it's damn dark up there sometimes.

All in all a good set, and I saw some folks I hadn't seen in ages.

Went to Boheme tonight. I've been sick all weekend (and had to skip out on the DSM Ren Faire today, grumble) but I decided that I needed to get onstage.

Nice, if somewhat rocky set. I did ...

How Can I Miss You?

So, two new songs and two safety songs. Had a sketchy reaction from the crowd, but it was well worth it. I won't be back next weekend, but I will be there the weekend after.

So, how was your weekend? Do anything fun?

The weekend

It was a busy busy weekend.

About this time last year a friend of Cryn's died. I sat in a sweat lodge as part of the ceremony after. Now, a year later they had a final ceremony. It was fascinating, not as amazing as a lodge (something I have to do again sometime) but still very cool and very beautiful.

The WSPA and I went to the pool that afternoon. The scenery was lovely.

And last night I had a great set at Boheme. I did ...

Marilyn Monroe (Dan Bern)
Almost Beautiful (the best version I have ever done)
Hides (a pretty angry version last night)

My friend Isaac played before me and was great. He didn't think so, but WOW has he improved as a guitar player and a performer.

Oh, and yesterday afternoon I saw Transformers with [livejournal.com profile] nainian. I thought it was great dumb fun.

Now I have to make it through work, and then home to do a bit more work on the grand project, and then to collapse.

So, how was your weekend, didja do anything fun?
ericcoleman: (Default)
Finally managed to get back to Boheme, after a few weeks of being busy. It was well worth it. It was a silly, loose, almost giddy set. I played ...

Only Coffee House
Low Self Esteem
Crank Generation
Color Of Your Eyes
How Can I Miss You?
Nice Guys

A couple of folks in the audience played along, to the point of requesting songs in the middle of other songs ... it was wunnerful

I had an amazing weekend ... how was yours?
ericcoleman: (Default)
www.boheme-iowa.com by the way ...

Only Coffee House In Town
Low Self Esteem (which I proved to be relatively false this weekend)
Trophy Wife
Color Of Your Eyes
How Can I Miss You?

A nice capper to a wonderful weekend. A woman in the audience played along a lot, thanks for that.

Night all ... hope you had a at least a fraction of the good time I had this weekend.

Ya know

I think I played well. There were few people there, and even fewer of them seemed to listen.

Boheme was fun last night. I didn't say much, just played some songs. My right hand wasn't really up to much speed, but I know ways around that.

Hey Dad!!!
In Crosby Park
Low Self Esteem
Hides

I couldn't quite get the speed at the end of Hides that I like to have, so no showy guitar stuff at the end. But it was still a very cool version.

The rest of the weekend was marvelous, spent a lot of time with the WSPA, who were in top form.

How was your weekend?

I was only going to do 4 songs, closing with Hey Dad, but Pete said two more, so I felt that I didnt want to do something that could drag out.

I took the 12 string for the first time, had some problems. Some odd overtones (I'm going to take it down and run it through my system, and work the EQ a little better) and some tuning problems. I'm used to the Tak. I can play a whole hour show with no tuning problems, but that is not the case with the 12. I just need to slow down,

But ... I didn't have any problems with my right hand. Some with my left, but that is because of the wider neck.

So ... how was your weekend ??? Mine was a little odd ...
ericcoleman: (Default)
Whew ... I did alright till the request came in. I haven't done Golden Age Of Silicon much lately, so I decided to just go ahead and skip the first verse completely.

I gotta practice ...

Only Coffeehouse In Town0
Bang My Bald Spot
Standards
Golden Age Of Silicon

I had promised myself that I would not forget any words, and I would not play anything too fast. I played everything at a reasonable tempo (although I did do something odd with a chord change in Bang My Bald Spot)

I played everything standing up, and seem to be making strides toward doing that well again.

It's good to be back.

So, how was your weekend ???
ericcoleman: (Default)
I was actually nervous ... that doesnt happen very often.

And since I was nervous, I messed up a lot .. a lot

Marilyn Monroe (Dan Bern)
Pine City Motel Blues (the readers digest condensed version ... don't ask)
Low Self Esteem
How Can I Miss You

As always, I played very very fast, Boheme does that to me ... but man does it feel good to be back ... signed up for next week even
