Low Self Esteem Talking Blues
Hey Dad
Bang My Bald Spot
WYSIWYG

There was no audience. People kept following me around and smoking at me. Still it was a nice relaxed set. I've been working on my right hand lately and getting more relaxed again

Funny enough ... postponed again.

I have a theory about what is going on.

The guy set things up, but didnt get any prizes and is now in a panic.

We'll see what happens.

So, there was a battle of the bands at a local place. I signed up.

I played a pretty good set, although I had some problems.

Product Might Be Hot
Bang My Bald Spot
Color Of Your Eyes
WYSIWYG
Hides

Isaac was one of the judges and said that this was the best he had seen me. He did say that I didn't play the dynamics on Color as well as I could (I agreed) and said that I should stop playing with a pick at times on Hides. I disagree with that. He said that I played the dynamics too well on Hides and he couldnt hear some of the notes. The problem was that I wasnt hitting them, which explains why he couldnt hear them.

It was, from my point of view, pretty good, but not as good as he thought.

I went to Bali for the first time in some ages ...

Hey Dad
Color Of Your Eyes
WYSIWYG
Low Self Esteem
Trophy Wife

I know I did another song but I can't think of what it is at the moment.

It was nice, the monitors weren't too loud and the audience was pretty attentive. A good warmup for the weekend.

I went and hit the open mike at Bali tonight ... well ... kinda wandered around it more than hit it ... I played an ok set ... kinda lazy ... WYSIWYG was especially odd ...

Product Might Be Hot - it's been too long ... but I played it ok ...
In Crosby Park - a pretty good version ... but still walking through the set
Color Of Your Eyes - I sang it great ... the high point of the set I think
WYSIWYG - an odd version ... I wandered through the banter in the middle of the song ... dunno why
Hides - I was told I could do two more songs ... I just did Hides ... told the Alex story about "it's a fucking long one" ... and played a long one ... kinda nice ...

I'm tired ...

I went to Bali Satay last night for the first time in ages ... I had wanted to try out some new stuff at Boheme sunday but some family issues kept me from going ...

I played a pretty good set. The new original went ok but I spaced some words. The two covers went as well as could be wanted. And I closed with two standards. I found that one of the jokes dosn't work which will be useful this weekend

So the set was

Standards - A newer song, it's almost there
I Want To Kill Everybody - Ed Haynes - This will be a crowd pleaser in a really twisted way ... but it's a twisted song
Marie Provost - Nick Lowe - A song I have done for awhile, but never really learned. Another twisted puppy.
Low Self Esteem - Shaky but a ton of fun
WYSIWYG - The joke about the pyramid scheme dosn't work yet, but the rest went great. The Paris Hilton joke gets the biggest laugh

A great night, I wish I could have stayed longer, but it's so late on a wednesday. I think I will start going more though.

On to Minneapolis tomorrow.

I dont think that it's happening ... I hope that I am wrong ... since I really like the folks who run it ... but there were 3 people signed up last night ... and no one listening ...

Golden Age Of Silicon - played it wide open for once ... I usually muffle the guitar a lot when I do this one
WYSIWYG - I cracked up my friend Matt ... rather than the usual commentary on the 3rd verse ... I just said "insert obligitory witty banter here" since he was one of about 3 people paying attention and they had heard the jokes before
Crank Generation - a very mellow version ... if you can imagine that
Low Self Esteem ...

So I went back to the open mike ... the crowd down front was listening ... the crowd at the bar got louder if I got louder ... I played an odd set ... started with

Marie Provost - Nick Lowe
Color Of Your Eyes (messed some guitar parts ... weird)
Almost Beautiful
Hides

I need to find a place to play longer shows ... this 15 minutes shit is driving me nuts

I went to the open mike at Bali Satay wednesday night ... I have never played anywhere where I have been so ignored through a set ... the level of conversation didnt change at all whether I was playing, finishing a song, or not playing at all ... needless to say it was a bit discouraging ... but I played a good set ...

In Crosby Park - Hadn't done this in awhile ...
Bang My Bald Spot
Golden Age of Silicon
New Dawn Fades (Joy Division ... requested by Braedon from Steps ... I made him go get my book from the van so I could remember the lyrics)
Oh Shannon (I decided to get real quiet since they were being so loud)
Hides

It was a good set ... pity hardly anyone heard it ...

So ... I jumped online after getting home from seeing my friends Brother Trucker play last night ... saw their first set of an early show ... great stuff ... they played a great set of mostly new stuff ... the next CD sounds like it is going to be a killer (they just put out a new CD so it will be awhile)

I was online and got that familiar AOL window ... an IM coming from outside AOL ... 90% of those are spam of some sort ... usually porn site adverts ... but the name made me laugh ... eatpandapoop ... I had to see what it was ... good thing ... it was a woman from the Duluth Reader who had been listening to my CD ... liked it (weird) and wants to review it and do an interview with me ... so I'll be online tuesday getting quizzed ... FUN ...

so the week got better ...
ericcoleman: (Default)
Good night last night ... the last night of the contest ... cept the finals which are next week ... I didnt get in ...

Did

Trophy Wife
Golden Age Of Silicon
Hides - and if I couldnt get in the finals with this version of Hides ... I couldnt get in with ANYTHING ... probably the most openly raw and emotional version I have ever done ... if it sounded half as good as it felt ... it was great ...

still ... what would I do with studio time ... I got my own studio ... I'm going to go to the finals cause I know 2 of the 3 finalists ... and I'm off next week anyway ...
ericcoleman: (Default)
So ... I went back to the open mike/contest again tonight ... it's got some press so it was absolutely PACKED ... a great audience ...
)
Three songs ...
Low Self Esteem
Trophy Wife (which went down GREAT)
Bang My Bald Spot (and the announcement was made ... funfunfun

AND ... I sold a CD ... and the woman who bought it asked what sort of a deal I would give on 10 ... so she ended up buying 11 CDs ... she's giving them to friends from Nigeria ... so ... three continents now

And I have enough to fund the next 100 on hand now ...

things are good

Oh ... she asked me if I expected to win ... I said no ... I dont really ... besides ... one of the prizes is free studio time ... I have all my gear already ... better that someone who dosnt get the prize ...

it's fun playing ... especially nights like tonight ... the audience was with me the whole time
ericcoleman: (Default)
Well ... the band who were going after me talked loudly during my entire two sets ... but I connected with the audience a few times ... a good time generally ... played a BUNCH of songs ... and learned some things that will come in useful next time ...

Bang My Bald Spot
