I went to see my friend Isaac play tonight. He's recording a live record. His set was marvelous. I have never seen him connect with an audience so well. I can't wait for his record

Playing with him was Midwest Dilemma from Omaha. Go listen to this song, really (it's on Myspace, sorry). This guy is one of the best songwriters I have heard in years and the band is astounding. Tonight it was Jason on guitar, Liz on clarinet and Jackie on flute (they play with as many as 20+ people live at home). Call it chamber folk, call it anything, but it is amazing. I can't wait for their record to come out.

WOW ... what an evening of music.

I talk about my friend Isaac occasionally. We have performed together, recorded together, we hang out at Mahtowa together every year.

You can hear some of his music now.

Good stuff ...

I headed off to record just before noon. I got the remainder of the stuff set up and waited for Isaac to show up. In the meantime I ran into my friend Snow (who has posted occasionally here, he needs to get an LJ account) and J, who cleans on the weekend. Geeze, this place is CLOSED on the weekend and everyone is there.

I got thing setup and Isaac and I fiddled for awhile trying to work out why the mikes wouldn't work.

I hadn't turned on the phantom power. Yeah I'm a professional.

We headed off to the local big barn home improvement place while J finished off so I could get a small screwdriver set for my gear bag (so I can change batteries easily on the DI) and nuts and bolts and washers to put the rack gear into the rack I am getting tomorrow. FUNFUNFUN

We fiddled with mike placement. Well, Isaac fiddled with mike placement, I just made things difficult because I kept moving.

He called the song we were going to work on. He had liked Need but agreed with me that the way I was playing it was just too frantic. I had a change in my head but I hadn't worked it out yet. I played a bit and we both came up at the same time that it really needed to be fingerpicked. I'm REALLY pleased with the new version. It is very sparse, has a great deal of space in it and with the settings Isaac came up with for the midiverb it has a REALLY cool sound.

Snow came back and we chattered with him a bit. He got to hear the track and agreed that it sounded cool.

We recorded In Crosby Park. I am still uncertain on the new middle section, but I am going to work with it today.

Then I headed off to meet with some old friends

I worked on some songs with my friend Isaac. Need is going to be wonderful. In Crosby Park is going to be fun. and that was about all we got done.

I went and met up with a bunch of old friends, musicians I knew years ago. It was a blast.

A good day. A real good day. More tomorrow.

Tonight

So ... it was a fun evening

The Woman I Want
Low Self Esteem
Standards
I Want To Kill Everybody
Bang My Bald Spot

The transitions were fun. Something I said made Isaac refer to my appearance in a certain bass player's list of men who got away, I made a comment about missing it totally and went right into Low Self Esteem.

I talked about working on the new CD (going to do scratch tracks next weekend, anyone wanna hear them?) and the covers CD. And just had a good time.

Weirdness

It was a very odd night last night.

I was invited to a party/jam session at my friend Isaac's house. Much funness up to a point.

Some time ago at Boheme there was this guy. He played covers. He was quite good. BUT. He would talk ... loudly ... during anyone elses set. The entire audience could be silent and listening and he would be talking to someone. Loudly.

So he was there last night. And we were all playing and having a good time. Isaac and I were starting up Hides. And he started up a conversation. Loudly. I stopped and went ballistic on him. Just too much frustration for too long and it was the last straw.

Have some respect for other musicians. For other people. I have been rude here and there in song circles, but I really try to be respectful. This guy has never been as far as I have seen.

I'm looking forward to playing at Boheme tonight. All the other local open mikes were closed this week due to break at ISU.
