I took Prince Tisanne to the guitar chiropractor tuesday. He returned from a nice restful vacation today sounding all purty.

Now I need to get Martin in ... he needs a fret job and some work on his neck. Poor guy

My bass needs some bridgework... how much should I expect a luthier to charge to glue in a taler bridge? If I grind the frets down, it just makes the problem migrate further down the neck...

Taller. Yes, I can spell. And type. Usually.

You mean an acoustic bass? It shouldn't cost too much to get a nice new bone saddle installed. Around $50, I imagine, but you can get it shimmed up for even cheaper. Still, I recommend a new saddle on almost any guitar. Go to the very best acoustic luthier you can find for that. Even my handmade acoustic benefitted significantly from having the saddle reshaped by a master (Marty at the Podium in Minneapolis). Marty is the best luthier I know, but for almost any work these days I'd go to Erin Randolph in Minneapolis, who is far more accessible, and cheaper too.

It's an el cheapo electric, aka 'buy something cheap to learn on that you don't really care about'. The problem is that on the strings, when you play the two low strings on the 2nd-4th frets, the string is so low that it vibrates against the 3rd-5th frets and thus doesn't really play properly. V. annoying. Also a bit of a challenge to play around them.

If it's electric, it probably has a somewhat adjustable bridge. Most good shops will do a setup for $25-30. It's a worthy investment on any guitar unless you're skilled enough to do setup work yourself.

I do note that your guitars have proper names. I like this and generally do it myself, although with the number of guitars I own, I've only named the most important ones. "Martin" is obviously a Martin; what kind of guitar is the Prince? And druidsfire, do I know you, and what kind of bass (both style and the make and model of the instrument) do you play? (Note that in some cases my "proper names" are a little too easy and obvious. My cherry red Ibanez Artist is just "Cherry," and the white Ibanez solid body is "Whitey," for instance. I gave them these names probably as a last resort before deciding it was too much hassle to name all of them.)

My old bandmate once said that naming your guitar is like naming your dick. :P

Then again, I've only ever named one guitar, my lovely Kallisti. Other guitars have names like "the Blueshawk", "the Yamaha", "the lap steel", etc.

I don't /think/ you know me (yet). Unless you were at MarsCon recently.

Only two of my guitars have names... the classical acoustic a friend gave me was already named Marilee. The Ovation-style acoustic... agh, I forget the brand, but Eric's seen him, I think... his name's Kieran. My red Fender strat hasn't deigned to tell me what his name is, but it'd probably be Pink Floyd related, since I got it because it was the same base style of strat Gilmour often plays.
