Sigh

I was in a wistful mood yesterday. gundo posted about Toyboat practice, then we all went to Guitar Center and I was foolish enough to go back into the drum room. I am shopping for a djembe (probably next year), but there are other drums in that room.

I miss playing the drums. I miss playing in Toyboat. And I have had 4 surgeries on my hands, and I don't want any more.

Yeah ... sigh.

I want a Handsonic 10, which would at least let me simulate the sound of a drum kit, but they are pricey. I want more hand drums, since I can play hand drums.

Doesn't change that I would love to be able to put a pair of sticks in my hands and pound away.

I think I'm completely done now. I did the snare part for Corvus the weekend Jason was here. We rehearsed Saturday and recorded Sunday.

My right thumb, the thumb I didn't have surgery on last year, clicked at night for more than a week. only at night, and not as bad as the left. It seems to have stopped now.

But yeah, only hand drums from now on.

My knee is doing better, I can walk pretty well today. Very little pain and the pain there is is more of an off balance thing from walking oddly for awhile now.

I see the specialist again Wednesday. Did the MRI last Friday. We'll see what the damage is, but it's beginning to look like it isn't anything major.

On the previous wounds. I think I have worked out a way I can still do the snare drum stuff with other musicians. I am going to put together a set of gloves with brushes attached, basically going out from the tips of my middle fingers, but with the index to ring fingers taped together, so no one finger takes all the brunt and no impact at all on either thumb. I think I can do shuffles and such quite well that way. It will be like playing the Handsonic (I need to get one of my own) or hand drums, both of which I can manage quite well. It doesn't solve full drum set playing, but that's ok, I can at least still do some drumming ... I hope. It may not work, but it's worth a try.

And today

My left thumb hurts quite a bit, especially when I play. So it is going to be a long slog, but it still looks hopeful

I've been doing a little stick work the last few days, but no serious playing. I took a break, went upstairs and plugged my iPod into my electronic set and played along with some Concrete Blonde. It felt amazing, no numbness, no grip problems. My left wrist started to complain after a song and a half so I stopped, but that is just fatigue, I haven't played since February.

It looks really promising!

Just wandered away from the open filk. It was marvelous. Getting to sit next to Dave Clement and listen to him sing is always one of the greatest pleasures of the year. I played drums for gundo, who was in full classic rock and folk mode (which is always fun) a lot, as well as a few others. Lizzie and I did Untitled, Widows Garden, Daughter Of The Red and a totally chaotic version of Critters. It was lovely.

Now to bed, and tomorrow start the trip back home. Home for close to two months. New songs will happen, there are several bubbling under right now, it's just a matter of letting them loose. But the main thing is home. It's been a lovely month or so, but we need some time to relax, get back into the regular schedule for awhile.

Thank you everyone here at Sf Contario, you have been so good to us.
