In this article on CNN.com today there was this quote ...

"Sources on Capitol Hill and at the Treasury Department said congressional and White House negotiators agreed upon checks of $600 per individual and $1,200 per couple."

Which is also known as $600 per person.

In some previous iterations, there has been a "marriage tax" factor; maybe $600 for individual filers and $1000 for MFJ.

Yes, those amounts are the same, but they see income tax returns which are given as individual or married-filing-joint - they are planning a single check per tax return, not one check per person.

But, last time, when I got a check for $300 from the government, two towers were knocked down! What will happen when they boost it to $600?

And, now, for a more serious response:

It seems to me that when they released the money last time, it was purportedly because we had a surplus. This time, we do not have a surplus, we have mindblowingly-large debt. So, to do this, we will go deeper into debt... which (as I understand it) is not a generally accepted way to boost an economy.

I find the math interesting where they state there would be additional amounts per child. In the interest of fairness, those of us (myself included) who have children actually paid less in taxes due to the deductions. Wouldn't only be fair that those without children get a larger check?

Great. I may get my $600 by June. Here is how I will use it to stimulate the economy-I will pay my past due oil heating bill of $616 for 206 gallons which lasted me 4 1/2 weeks. Or maybe, I'll help my son pay for health insurance which he can't afford. Or maybe, I will help my elderly parents pay their over-due real estate taxes that keep going up on their fixed income. Or maybe, I'll donate it to our neglected veterans to help pay their bills and healthcare that the government does not. Maybe, It will come in time to bail my house out of forclosure! How's that for doing my part in stimulating the economy! Thank you so much Mr. Government! Can't wait till June!

Sort of...one thing is that a person that might not qualify because he/she earns too much might qualify because as a couple they together earn less than the cap.

government math = everyone loses

the last time i got $300, i had to DEDUCT THAT from the next year's tax refund.

(un)fortunately for me, i was so far under the poverty level at that time, i was still able to get a refund.

This is completely naive and unfeasible, but if they REALLY wanted to boost the economy, it'd be cool to get rid of income and sales taxes for a year. LOL. :-D
