Fandom

Ok, fandom is a small community. I run into folks all over and frequently find it hard to remember where I met them.

This is the oddest connection I have though.

When I was 15 I went to a british school. You can see it in my school listings. My father was in England doing research on Buffalo Bill (actually he was researching british women more, but he had just gotten divorced so that is to be expected). I went to Highgate Wood Secondary School.

Some months back I got an email from naomikritzer asking WHY I had gone to this particular school. Turns out that she had gone to the school a decade later under pretty much the exact same circumstance. So ... we went to the same school, under the same circumstance ... add to that.

We are both in fandom, met through livejournal and ... we know a bunch of the same people, but had never actually met till this last weekend.

So what is your strangest connection in this community?

My father told me that the daughter of one of his college professors had just won some major science fiction award (my mother worked for the same professor). Turns out her name was Lois McMaster Bujold.

I also owe my current job to Mike Resnick.

Probably not what you had in mind, but one odd connection that amuses me:
guppiecat is pretty much responsible (in a ripples-in-the-pond way) for me being where i am in fandom.....including getting to know this nutball musician ;) have known him for years, but never really overlapped in regards to fannish activities.
Apparently you two have known each other for quite some time too.....and until LJ, no one knew we all knew each other :)
All in fandom, met (at least guppie/me) away from fandom, group-connected via lj-land....

We have known each other for a few years. He saw me at an open mike, then I asked about coming and performing at Demicon.

Yeah ... and found out that he knew Clan Bundle as well ...

I was going through random journals in LJ and found one for quaryndk. She lives in Denmark and is into all the geek things. She seemed pretty cool, so I asked if I could friend her.

Turns out she used to live in Champaign and knows starstraf.

She's just a nexus point like that. I went to undergrad with her in Cleveland. Then, before she went to Champaign, she went to school in California and knew cadhla and her crowd.
