He had this sound system with him last night, which sits behind the singers, so I was a little worried about my ears. They seem to be ok today.

It was a short, but well recieved set. I did

Low Self Esteem
Trophy Wife
Bang My Bald Spot
Only Coffee House In Town
How Can I Miss You?
Nice Guys

I lost them a little by the end, but it was still a good response.

I played a short set

In Crosby Park (once again with Kyle)
Almost Beautiful
Bang My Bald Spot
Hides

I think I am putting Hides away for awhile, except to pull it out at shows ... it's gotten to be kind of by numbers lately, not bad, just not all that good.

whew ...

I was in a mood at Crave tonight ... three songs ... a level of ferocity that I have not hit as a musician in quite some time

Home Again - with the right words this time. I must remember to always tell the truth in my songs, whatever that truth may be. One word change makes the song truer than it ever was before.
Wilderness Of Smiles - with Larry playing along from the audience ... he was great ... I think I was too
Hides - the aggressive acoustic thrash version ... I needed that sort of catharsis tonight, it felt good. And Larry played along on hand drum through it too. He was great again.

I did act like a bit of an ass after my set. I was talking with a guy about his gear (he had the floor POD system for the guitar) and I didn't realize that I still had my earplugs in so I think I yelled all the way through some poor kid's first song. Geeze ... I know better

I went to Crave Grill tonight for the open mike and worked on a few songs that I am trying to re-attach to my brain so I can just sail through them at the Tillie's show ...
Two short sets ... I did

Things You Never Know - it's been awhile for this one, but the work I have been putting in paid off and it was a pretty good version
The One I Chased Away - I did fine with the lyrics, but messed up the chords for the chorus every time. I know what I need to work on with it now though
Hides - Cause I had to do something familiar, and it was a serious set. Interesting intro this time out, found some new stuff that I hadn't done before.

Ghosts - With the new lines, it worked just fine. I don't have it locked in my brain yet, but I do well enough that a simple cheat sheet (as compared to a really complicated one) will do just fine.
Need - I think I have this down, but the 2nd verse still gave me a couple of little fits.
How Can I Miss You? -Just end the set on an up note, after a lot of depressing songs. Backed up by the Crave Hillbilly Chorus (this title becomes very funny if you see the restaurant)

So, this weekend looks good, I'm going to work on more songs tomorrow and then give my fingers and guitar a rest on friday.

Oh, Lojo Russo friday night here in Des Moines. ritualcafe.com

I went to the Crave Grill open mike last night ... did three songs ... it was outside and pretty darn chilly

Low Self Esteem
Bang My Bald Spot
How Can I Miss You?

I was going to do some serious stuff, but it was a real small crowd so I did a safety set

tonight at the standup open mike I just did songs, not much patter ...

Standards (which no one seems to remember me doing there before, I need to go back and check)
Low Self Esteem

It was fun, lots of folks laughed a lot ... so that's a good thing.

Now I have to practice some songs I am doing next week ... two sets ... gonna be ... well ... interesting

I went to the open mike at Crave last night. I got there late, so I went on VERY late. I played ...

Low Self Esteem - kinda interesting under my current circumstance
How Can I Miss You?
Nice Guys

I was not at my best, but it was ok. I was ignored by most of the remaining audience after my first song.

A message for anyone who wants to perform at an open mike. Have your act together. Have all of your gear ready so you can start performing in a minute or two. Don't take 15 minutes setting up for a 15 minute set. Leave your amps at home, leave all of your effects pedals at home (unless they are integral to a certain song). Just bring your instrument and show us what you can do. Don't waste the time of the audience or the other performers.

I went to the open mike at The Crave Grill. Definitely not my sort of place, and what is it with this fondue resurrgence lately ???

However, the open mike, run by Larry Berenguel was exceptional as always. Larry is a great musician, and draws other great musicians (and me)

The bass player was a monster, the drummer has this really really cool Yamaha electronic drum kit ... I want one ...

Larry opened the show with some covers, with the drummer backing him up. He was great as always. I went next and played a short set.

Only Coffee House In Town
Color Of Your Eyes
Hey Dad !!!
Bang My Bald Spot

After me was a woman who I feel I should recognize, but can't quite come up with why. She did various covers. She has a really lovely voice and a very cool 12 string. Of course I can't think of her name.

After her was Kyle, and the rest of his name escapes me. He is a pretty well known local blues-ish player who is incredible (and a very cool guy as well). Part of his set had a flute player, she was great as well.

I couldn't stay for the second rotation due to previous plans that I was informed of after I made these plans (it's a family thing)

I will go back though, probably in two weeks. Next week is getting ready for Mahtowa.

A little more
