About to hit tie road
Aug. 4th, 2006 09:36 amI am heading up to Mahtowa in just a bit. I do have to detour south. Some of my camping stuff is stored in my studio, which is at work, and I forgot to put it in the car last night. That adds an hour to my day. Grumble
I will not have much access to the net this weekend. About the only place I will have access is if I stop at one of the Iowa rest stops (they all have wireless now).
Think about me around 5pm tomorrow. I'm onstage then (or thereabouts, depends on if things run on time)
Have a good weekend.

The Highway 61 Folks Festival is this weekend.
If you are in Minnesota, it's about 2 hours from Minneapolis, a half hour south of Duluth right off 35.
I'm posting the second song I am doing tonight on my myspace account. Ghosts has been up there a week now (and only 4 people have listened to it). I think it is the second best serious song I have written (after Hides). The song I am putting up there tonight will probably never exist anywhere else, so grab it while you can.
If you love great folky stuff, great singer-songwriter stuff, or if you just want to hang out with me. Get your tent and come on up. It's free, even the camping.

As always I can't recommend this more highly. It is the best day of songwriting I hear all year. It's a lovely place. There is free camping (albeit a little rough, but it is still in town), free music, good folks, good food and as I have already said GREAT MUSIC.
There are bands both friday and saturday night, including my friend the amazing Charlie Parr.
This is something that I would love to be able to share with my friends. So many of you would love this.

I am the last person to go on in the Highway 61 Folks Festival Songwriting Contest
.
I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
I am right after Bill Gausman, who is the only other person to bring funny songs to the contest. I think they might be surprised at a serious song this year.
I'm fiddling with the front page of my website. Comments are welcome.

The new songs
Jul. 14th, 2006 02:15 pmThe two songs I am doing in the Highway 61 Folks Festival songwriting contest are coming along nicely. I hope to get down here this weekend or next to do demos of them so I can upload them to my MySpace.com page so everyone can enjoy hear them. Seeing as how one of them will probably be done nowhere else ... this is a good or bad thing depending on your point of view.
Some updates
May. 11th, 2006 02:51 pmI am now officially a finalist in the Highway 61 Folks Festival songwriting contest. I am the ONLY person in the contest every of it's 5 years.
I just finished about 90% of one of the songs that I will be doing in the contest. I think it's gonna be just darn funny. I have another new song that I hope to have done by that point, we'll see.
The Duckon show will be with Andy Anda on fiddle. The shows that Andy and I play together are always really special and this is the first time we have had a chance to do this at a Chicago con.
janmagic has asked that the show be all serious songs. I am so looking forward to this. No one ever asks for my serious stuff.
More later.

Putting the money where ...
Dec. 23rd, 2005 09:52 pmI want to publicly thank
appleboy
You all have seen me rant about the Highway 61 Folks Festival. He and his fella came to see me at the festival this year.
He went out and bought the CD. Just so you know it's not just me talking, here is what he had to say about the disc.
It's incredible songwriting, incredible performing.
If you love solo singer/songwriter stuff, you can hear some of the best I hear every year on ANY of their discs. I have fallen in love with this place and it is has been the highlight of my year every year for 4 years running now.
Once again, thank you. I'm so glad you like the disc (even with that obnoxious guy on track 13)

Two comps in one week
Dec. 7th, 2005 07:10 pmI just got my copy of The Highway 61 Folks Festival CD.
If you want the song How Can I Miss You now, rather than wait for my new CD to get done (which could be some time ya know) you can support this wonderful little festival and buy the CD from them, since it's on there.

News from Mahtowa
Sep. 16th, 2005 12:22 pmDear Eric,
On behalf of The Highway 61 Folks Festival Committee I am happy to inform you that your song, "How Can I Miss You" has been chosen to appear on the Highway 61 Folks Festival 4th Annual Songwriter's Compilation CD.
I can honestly say that we had a great time listening to the 50 songs that were performed at this year's Festival and, after much debate; we finally decided that 17 songs would be included on this year's collection.

Tomorrow I leave for the Highway 61 Folks Festival for the weekend.
I am in the songwriting contest, where I fully expect to have my ass handed to me for the 4th year in a row, and I'll love it. The folks around there are incredible songwriters.
Sunday I am hosting the open stage. My friend Isaac and I have worked up some stuff for the occasion, and a bunch of the locals will be performing as well. It's going to be great.
So if you find yourself about a half hour south of Duluth MN on saturday or sunday ... come and watch
Then I have almost 2 months with no road trips ... at least at the moment ... that will change.

I should talk about this
Jul. 26th, 2005 03:25 pmSince it's this weekend.
I am at Demicon in Des Moines.
Friday Night at 9 (I think, check your program) I am onstage with Sass, that being the wonderful duo of Susan Urban and Sandy Andina. We have a 2 hour slot and have not discussed exactly what we are doing with it yet. It may be the three of us standing up there and cracking ourselves up, or we may do two shows, theirs and mine. Either way it will be fun.
The following weekend I am in Mahtowa MN for the Highway 61 Folks Festival. I am in the songwriting contest on saturday and hosting the open mike on sunday. My friend Isaac is going as well and we are working on some songs to do together tonight.
It is, as always, the best day of music I see all year. Come on up.

Mahtowa Update
Jun. 23rd, 2005 11:48 amOk, Coming up in a little over a month is my favorite time of year, that being the Mahtowa Folks Festival in Mahtowa MN.
It is the best year of music I hear all year and I am in the songwriting contest again ... AKA the yearly kicking of Eric's songwriting butt. There is something in the water up there I swear. But, it is wildly worth the trip (it's only 2 1/2-3 hours from the Twin Cities) to see some amazing songwriters, most of whom you will never hear outside of this contest.
And, since they are nice folks, I am hosting an event sunday afternoon, basically as I have been told it is a round robin singer songwriter afternoon.
So come on up, it's gonna be fun.
