ericcoleman: Cheshire Moon (Cheshire Moon)

I took a look at Craigslist last week, as I do occasionally. I read the instrument sales, the musicians section and occasionally the personals, just to make me miss the Reader even more (not one as amusing as the least amusing personal ad I ever read in the Reader).

I see this ... "Fiddler looking for group". I have seen a couple of these here and there over the last few years, usually looking for a bluegrass or similarly old-timey sort of band.

The ad, in part, reads ... "I'm a fiddler, singer and songwriter. I've played pretty much everything a fiddle might fit in: Celtic, Klezmer, Modern Folk, Goth, Folk Metal, Punk Folk, Old-timey, Bluegrass, Classical."

Lizzie is on chat, I ask if I should email this person, knowing full well what the answer would be.

The fiddler responds in an hour or so, we talk back and forth a bit, she listens to some of the tracks on the website and says that she thinks she can add something to our music.

We got together last night, the first thing I notice is that she is wearing a con shirt. We establish that ... well ... we know a lot of the same people. She was on a songwriting panel with S00j at Arisia last year!

So yeah, a Geek Fiddler. She is, from what she said, on FB, but I haven't tracked her down yet, But anyway, welcome Susan, she'll be playing with us at the S00j house concert.

Of course she's a geek. "looking for group" is a pretty common thing for a geek to post.

Usually at the game store, but still....

Glad someone caught the reference. It was meant as a tip-off to anyone who caught it.

Susan Weiner, former fiddler for Stranger Ways before accepting a post-doctoral position at U. of Iowa. (Why yes, I did some digging. It was Arisia 2010, by the way. :) ) Listening to some of the online tracks from their first album, yeah, she sounds like she'll be a good match for Cheshire Moon.

Fair enough. The page on their site that talks about her going-away party said University of Iowa. :)

And yes, pre-existing context (with a presumably positive impression) is never a bad thing.

Oh good Susan found you guys

She's lovely and I think we may have a gaming person now as well. I wonder what she plays but since she does write LARPs, it's a possibility. :)

I first met her at a LARP (Marlowe 2020)

I have gamed with her multiple times, but she much prefers theatrical larps to boardgames or card games. I seem to remember her liking Apples to Apples, Dixit, and definitely Encore.

I write LARP, I play in the local LARP group, I like strategy boardgames and the like. I like tabletop, but it hasn't been a priority in recent years and I haven't had a regular group in quite some time.

This amuses me so much. It is perhaps proof that the brain eater -- the phenomenon by which all science fictional worlds eventually get crossed over with each other -- applies to fandom too.

Hey welcome Susan! Now you just need to get her at Con and meet Amy.

We're hoping to do just that. Minicon can't happen because it's easter weekend, but we're trying. Maybe this summer if she isn't teaching on campus.

Normally Easter weekend would be no problem, but this year Seder happens to fall on the Friday of the con, and that's just not happening.

That's totally understandable, hon. but you have to meet an Amy. It's become a moral imperative.

Capricon. (And yes, she should meet Amy before then, but just think what fun w/ could have if we had Amy, Susan and if we could entice Andy A into attending again. The Sunday jam would be stellar!)
