Talking about guitar, if you can play G,C,D and E (and therefore Em) and own a capo you can play 90% of popular music. And you can get to where you can do it in a couple of months if you are at all coordinated ... a little longer if you aren't. That is just simple strumming, but still ...
I am beginning to get the impression that learning the BASICS is pretty easy, but that the details of it are the things that can keep a person interested in it for a lifetime.
