I've become a big fan of the Big Bang Theory. So I have a question for all of my geek family out there, of the characters in the show, which have you known, and which have you been?
I've known all of them and been all of them (or at least bits of them) at one point or another. I think that's why fans (and others) love the show so much. We all recognize ourselves in it, and we admit it. It's not just "Hey, I recognize that guy" it's "I've been in that same conversation in the ConSuite!" Even "mundanes" have their own fannish moments, and they recognize them too just as we do which is why it's so popular, I think.
The thing that impresses me so much about this show is the way that the Penny and the guys started out as charicatures and have developed into characters. Usually in sit-coms it's the other way 'round.
My views are almost certainly going to be in the minority, but that show rubs me the wrong way in the same way that Sharyn McCrumb's Bimbos of the Death Sun did. This is one of the ways Bill G. and I disagree...he loves that show and can't understand why it annoys me.
Of course, I might warm to it if nearly every single line of dialogue wasn't immediately followed by a huge crash of canned laughter...I dislike laugh tracks intensely (it's a tradition long overdue for scrapping---if I think a line is funny, I know how to laugh, thanks) and IMO they 'way overuse it on that show.
Oh, I am recognizing far too many "Sheldon moments" in my these days. I guess I always was this way but now am seeing it reflected back. At least now I can cal it OCD and not the less than nice term of anal retentive anymore! :)
I was probably closer to Sheldon at various times early in HS/College, then got tired of dealing with Sheldons and became more like Leonard. I would like to think I was never Howard, though we share a certain Jewish background. I've been as shy as Rajeesh and as verbally whimsical as Chuck Lorre's vanity cards. I knew lots of Pennys to varying degree (which is mainly a compliment). My uncle and brother are both PhDs in Physics (at MIT no less) so many of the other characters are familiar.
To sum up: While the parallels are non-Euclidian, of the group I'm likely closest to a lactose-tolerant Leonard.
I don't think they represent female geekdom too well. I'm kind of Penny in that I go between the two worlds, but I'm definitely a geek, whereas she is not.
I like Leslie Winkle cuz she's a true female geek, but that's all they've had, and that's where the similarities end.
And I think Leonard's mom is on the autism spectrum. Sheldon might be, too. Although Jim Parsons is just brilliant and somehow makes him likable.
i was in love with the show before it started. i was watching it by my self then i had to stop it to share with hubby. chuck lorre gets it right ( in my mind) so many times. of course my favorite vanity card is the link above. I think the show was renewed for 2 years because fandom has found it and spread the word, i know i have turned many on to the show. Kathy mar traveled across country and shared it with everyone on the trip. talk about jonny appleseed!

"Big Bang" is really something of a misnomer...

I'm disappointed; I was hoping to get their email addresses. They seem like nice people.
