Total Sci-Fi ran a poll, and this is what they got.

The top ten are

1: Blade Runner (1982)
2: 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
3: Star Wars (1977)
4: Alien (1979)
5: Metropolis (1927)
6: The Day The Earth Stood Still (1951)
7: The Terminator (1984)
8: Planet of the Apes (1968)
9: E.T. (1982)
10: Solaris (1972)

I've never seen Solaris, but I have seen (and own most of) the rest.

So, what doesn't belong there? And what should be there instead?

I would agree with that. Seeing this whole list, swapping their spots would be okay.

I have not seen Solaris, so I would have a hard time ruling it out, as it seems to be of consideration by the narritive in the Top 100 list.

I'd be hard pressed to say that any of those films don't belong there, but I think that "Back to the Future" ought to have a place. And I've got a soft spot for "Frequency".

I'd switch Close Encounters for E.T., Empire Strikes Back for Star Wars and Silent Running for Solaris.

The (original) Terminator owns everything.

I've seen both versions of Solaris and was bored to tears, twice. Maybe there's something I'm not getting, but it wouldn't make my top 100.

On the other hand, if "science fiction" is exploring how technology affects people's lives, then one of the best sf movies ever is Singing In The Rain.

Close Encounters over Solaris.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind and When Worlds Collide belong; E. T. and Solaris do not.

I'm screwing it all up.

I haven't seen Solaris or Metropolis.

I'm probably the only person I know who did not like Blade Runner. (Although I'm willing to give it another chance. It's been a few years since the last time I tried to sit through it.)

Could I add WALL-E? Because I'd add that. I would also add the most recent Star Track, because it's freakin' hot. If that one's not allowed, I'd recommend Khan and/or Nemesis. (I *like* this franchise, lemme alone already.) Is Cloverfield sci-fi? Or just straight up monster movie? Can I put JJ Abrams on this list? Or should he go on the other list with Ewan MacGregor?

Perhaps even the Matrix. I also really liked Gataca, but I'm also aware of my minority status in that camp.

I'd take Planet of the Apes off. I enjoyed these movies, and I even liked the Marky-Mark edition. (I even PREFER the Marky-Mark edition.) But it's not what I'd call a "great" movie.

Star Wars never struck me as a sci-fi, and the re-releases when I was in my 20s demonstrated to me that they're also not "great" movies. I love them. But yeah. The Godfather they are not.

Mostly, I'm just annoyed that there's nothing more recent on that list.

EDIT: Okay, I admit I didn't think to look at the full 100 when typing the above. Having done so now, I'd add Men in Black, and move Forbidden Planet up a few notches. I'm glad to see Starship Troopers on their list.

Metropolis is well worth a watch. It's visually quite impressive at points. Certainly 'This was made 90 years ago?' inducing. It's like The Day The Earth Stood Still in that it makes average/crappy films look even worse.

Solaris is too damn long really. But I guess it's worth a watch once. Example, there is like a 15 minute shot of traffic in it and that isn't a joke!

I mean the idea is fantastic, interaction with a truly alien intelligence but it really drags.

Forbidden Planet should be there somewhere. And Silent Running probably deserves to be in the top 15...
Never saw Solaris either.
