Now if I could only find Willy Wonka in DVD or even videotape! I've been looking for it for a couple years.

"This is the Puppet Hospital and Burn Center. It's relatively new."

Awesome.

The book is a great book.
The new Depp movie is pretty close to the book, and pretty good.
The older Gene Wilder WW&TCF is not very close to the book at all. But it was and still is one of the transformative movies of my life.

Note who wrote the original movie.

And I don't recall the book having a dentist ending.

Me either. But super-creepy Depp Willy is a lot closer to the Willy in the book than lovable eccentric Wilder Willy. And Deep Roy is much closer than a bunch of green-haired midgets in silly pants.

I'll go with you on Deep Roy...But not recycling Onigo Boigo songs.

But the point of the book was that Wonka loved kids and hated bad manners. Depp plays it like he has no idea what a child is and is scared of them...So WHY does he hand his factory to one? Wonka in the book also had lots of energy and was jumping and dancing around all over the place. Depp's portrayal of Michael Jackson...I mean Wonka was the opposite. He just did his standard "I'm in yet ANOTHER Tim Burton movie...Yawn." bit

Wilder got it. He did it with such subtlety. He was brilliant. He got the joke and you see it each time you watch it.

If I could take the start of Burton's movie and tack on the factory from the classic, it would be a perfect movie. It's like the original stinks until they get to the factory and Burton's starts to stink when they get the factory.

I liked the recent Jonny Depp movie, but the original with Gene Wilder will always have a special place in my heart so it wins my vote.
