When people first started making multi-driver speaker enclosures, they needed something to call the different speakers. In the early days, they were generally splitting the spectrum into three bands, and they called the high-end one the "tweeter", the low-end one the "woofer", and the one in the middle the "honker."
Three-driver speakers fell out of fashion for a while, leaving us with just woofer and tweeter. Then they came back into vogue, but the "honker" name was not picked back up. Now we have "tweeter," "midrange," and "woofer."
