Much as I like Gaiman, he wouldn't be anything without Moore blazing the trail.

Not only that, but Moore tends to have more solid plotting, and subtler characterization. Actually, the difference in sheer name between Sandman and Watchmen sums them up nicely for me: Gaiman is exquisite at painting dreams and fantasies, while Moore's stories are finely-constructed machines that do exactly what they need to do when they need to do it.

Exactly.

I don't think Moore could have written Coraline - but I don't think Gaiman could have done Watchmen.

They're really very different, if you ask me.

Gaiman's like a happy medium between Moore and Morrison.

I can barely tolerate Morrison. Gaiman I enjoy, but in smaller doses. I did really dig American Gods, though.

That's probably what it is to me-- I got less and less into Sandman as it got more and more...well, dreamy and abstract.

Moore just grabs me by the nuts and won't let go, and in his case I actually like it;)
