i am not usually somewhere that escape is impossible when there's a barking dog. crying babies are usually on buses, planes... places that i'm not really able to go elsewhere.

also, barking dogs could be warning of impending mummy attacks. which is helpful.

It's simple. Those who have dogs are used to it and those who have babies are used to it.

You like the baby more.

Then I suppose it depends on how hungry the dog is ...

There are messages in either, if one knows how to listen. The bark of a dog or cry of a baby, either of whom are just making noise because they are lonelybored, is designed to be annoying enough to make anybody pay attention.

I know the difference between mailman-bark, boyfriend-bark and OMG-STRANGERS bark.

For me a barking dog makes me think: "Hmm ... the dog is barking. There could be invaders coming to steal my cornbread. I'd better be on guard and reward the dog with cornbread."

While a crying baby makes me think: "Hmm ... crying baby. I wonder where I can find a large rock?"

Smashing baby's skulls in is hilarious LOLZ!!!

When I hear a dog bark, I think: "Time to start up the grill!"

More like...That dog saw a shadow and won't shut up...Or a car drove by...Or there was wind...Where's a shot gun?

That's preferable to "I need food...Or I need sleep...Or I need to expel gas...Or I pooped myself...Or I don't know what the hell I need because I have limited concepts of the world and no capacity for language!"

It's easier for me to tune out most dog barks, if they're something I can't control. Babies crying really get to me, because I go into instant "Mother" mode and want to fix it.
