I have never started out disliking a kind of music and then changed my mind about it. There are certain forms (such as Irish trad) that I have come to have more regard for over time, but never anything for which I started out as having an active dislike.
Prog rock. ELP primarily. Thought it was self-indulgent, bombastic crap. Course it still is self-indulgent and often bombastic, but I really love it now. I get the innovation whereas earlier I didn't.
Led Zeppelin. I always associated it with the people who tormented me throughout school, and so learned to hate it. Also it was "pothead" music and I was and still am vehemently anti-drug. But I have learned to separate that out and now crank Zeppelin yea verily.
I was definitely on another plane. When I was 15 and everyone else was listening to Rush, Sabbath, Boston, etc. I was listening to Duke Ellington, Chuck Mangione, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea. Course I also listened to Top 40 stuff, so who knows where I as at.....
Interesting. I hooked into ELP at a young age (16 - I'm 47 now) along with the rest of the prog tradition, and never really thought of it as self-indulgent. Then again, Rush's "La Villa Strangiato" is subtitled "An Exercise in Self-Indulgence", so there you have it.
