[Poll #1299708]

This sent to me at about 9:59 Central Standard Time this morning by [livejournal.com profile] ntrlstgrl. Oddly enough I was at both of them last night, one of them against my will, but shopping in Ames is, well, a little limited sometimes.

I won't even set foot in a Wal-Mart. Target ... well, the quality of the store varies a lot between particular locations, so that's a bit more variable. Of course that leaves aside the fact that Target rarely has anything that actually both fits me and looks like something I'd wear. (In the days when I did shop at Wal-Mart or Sam's Club, I recall having the same problem there.)

Tar-zhay is, by a very small margin, the lesser of two weevils.

I have one Wal-Mart and 3 Targets all in biking area. You tell me which one is wiping out small businesses?

Target also wiped out a block with the best music stores and restaurants for their downtown location. All they need to do is ad Condos next to it and they'll have you.

It's not just small business. It's fair wages for employees, fair treatment of employees regardless of gender, fair treatment of suppliers...

Must! Resist! Rant! As Well!

I worked for Target. It sucked. They suck. They lied about hours and they cheated on pay. I lost a month of time and job-hunting because they were not straight with me nor the 15 other new-hires.

I hate thinking about all they toy lines that have died all because Target refused to carry them as well as other products and items they wiped out so they could have the market on their own in-house brand.

I wish people would look at Target the way they do Wal-Mart. All of these big place stores suck, but I'm getting sick of Target getting this magical pass because they hire white people (Minorities can work in the back room or the night shift) and sweep their floors.

Wal-Mart is six times the size of its next largest competitor. Levi-Strauss makes jeans in China because of Wal-Mart.

No, Target does not get a pass. But Target couldn't do half the damage Wal-Mart is doing if they tried, because they're simply not big enough.

I chose Target because that is my default store for things like toiletries, etc. but I was tempted to choose Walmart if for no other reason than we are working with them right now and I've spent all day on presentations for them.

Wal-Mart.

Because it is close and the Target is far. As in 'in another city' far.

And, really, Wal-Mart is not so bad. It's not the best at any one category but the prices are reasonable.

Locally I've found the 'drive business away' thing to be overblown. We got a Wal-Mart here five years ago .. and downtown is fine. Better than ever, with more restaurants, an office complex replacing the mill.

The area where the Wal-Mart is was undeveloped. It now has a dozen restaurants and more stores in three strip malls. Where Wal-Mart went, the small biz followed.

Wal-Mart. I love Target and I shop there, but neither of our Targets can hold a candle to any of the Wal-Mart's in the area.

Ever since Wally World screwed a Christmas for me (ordered a bunch of things online, and they screwed the order over 1000 different ways), I have boycotted the store.

Target I use as my pharmacy (since I get a 10% discount when I have to pay, and the insurance reimburses me the 100%, so I gain a few $). Plus they have a couple of cute pharmacists to stop and see every time I need meds.

I don't do a lot of other shopping there. Miscellaneous home goods when needed. Much better than K-Mart.

Target is Choice #2. There are two Meijer's that I will hit first, though. Wal-Mart is too far from home to make even a long list (there's a third, even larger, Meijer between home and Wal-Mart).

I picked Wal-Mart because it's close, and Target is in the next town. Oddly enough, our Wal-Mart has live lobsters. I didn't realize this was odd or unusual until Seanan came for visit and was amazed. Simon likes to watch the lobsters sometimes -- it keeps him occupied when I am poring over produce.

It is like picking the worst of a bad bunch...because they both have major drawbacks.

I chose Target because, unlike Wal-Mart, I don't feel like I have to shower after I leave Target.
