Throughout my life, if someone was going to get my name wrong, they called me Chris. This has happened repeatedly since I was a kid.

It hadn't happened for a few years. A couple weeks ago I was getting a breakfast sandwich from Panera's, and they guy tried to remember my name and called me Chris.

I bust out laughing, he looked confused so I explained. The story has been repeated to several people there and now at that store I am "NotChris" when they call my name when my food is done.

A LOT of people call me "Jason".

I sorta understand it when it's in person and they don't listen to my name when I introduce myself.

I don't understand why it happens in email.

I have the same thing with David, which is my father's name, but people who don't know my father do it as well.

Interestingly, the two members of Positive Attitude are named Eric and Chris.

I am "Jennifer" to more people than I care to think about. Look folks, just because I was born between 1974 and 1986 and my name starts with a "J" does not mean I'm a Jennifer.

But I have a friend named Ben who has it worse. He always seems to get called "Matt" by people...

...who have never met (or even know of) his identical twin brother, who happens to be named Matt...

I don't see what's so hard about spelling or pronouncing Adrienne McClintock. It's not Andrea, Angela, Andrena, Adriana (at least you're close on that one), Adrianne (closer, but still wrong), Andriaen (where the heck did you get that one?), Andrien, Adrian (that's a guy spelling, and yes, women DO love sharp, pointy things, Mr. Knife Catalog person), and where the heck did you get McCointock? Is my handwriting or pronounciation really that bad?

The boyfriend's name is Brice, not Bryce, or Bruce. Not Brian. That's his dad's name, sort of, though he goes by his middle name of Wayne. Brice was adopted and his birth name was Brian, and the adoptive dad didn't want a little Brian, so calling him Brian is kinda weird.

[livejournal.com profile] raven_ap_morgan's real name is not Raven. But at least people don't seem to have trouble spelling or pronouncing that. Then again, there was that package from Guitar Center addressed to (real first name) Raven (such person does not exist), 6900 block of a street that only goes to 6600, in the city of Rogers Park, IL. Rogers Park is a part of Chicago, like Wrigleyville, Hyde Park (University of Chicago area), Gold Coast, Lincoln Park, and not an actual city. "Addressing problem?", they said? A little more than that, actually!

I'm sure my kids have interesting problems. Xon is not John, or Sean, Shaun, Shawn, Exxon, or Xon/ Xoff. It's pronounced Zhon, and yes, he is named after somebody. My daughter's name is Lojen, not Logan, and not Jennifer (though I've heard that used before), and sure as hell not Jenny. She was named after my grandma, Lois Jean, who passed away in October. My parents hated both names at first, but the kids clearly loved them before kindergarden. Afterwards, they both refused any sort of nicknames, and insisted on being called their actual names. My grandma wasn't quite sure how to feel, but was later quite pleased by having such a great granddaughter named after her, but with a unique name for a unique kid. My dad calls my daughter "Lo", or "Hey, Lo!" just as he called my grandma. She was always Grandma Jean to me, but was Auntie Lo to the rest of the family.

My parents said I shouldn't give my kids weird names, because they'd get beat up. I replied, "You thought Adrienne and Andy were perfectly normal names for a girl and a boy, and we got beat up on the walk home from school all the time!"

I've got far too many friends named Chris. One day, I said, I give up. I'm calling you all by your online names. #1, you are now Dreamtime Chris, also known as Fatass Chris. #2, you are now known as Crhis, because you can't type your own name. #3, you are now known as Dengar, because that's your character name online, and you look just like the ugly bounty hunter... in a hawaiian shirt.

You are now known as Deep Fried Pants Eric.
