Haven't read any of the CIGT books but I can't stand how the Dummies books are written. There is way too much folksy conversational crap you have to wade through to get to anything resembling real instruction. The couple I tried to use could be boiled down to 20 page pamphlets for all the "real" content they held.
I like the For Dummies books. The "folksy conversational crap" (as one of your commentors put it) can be quite helpful for me. If I didn't need a For Dummies book I wouldn't need a For Dummies book, if you know what I mean. ;-)
I've had a Complete Idiots book before and liked it, but tend to get more good "getting started" info out of the FD books.
You're very right, it does vary from book to book. I found that the Crochet book has been wonderful for me, and I like the Tarot book *very* much. It doesn't condescend, but it makes some things plain in such a way I'd gladly give it to someone I knew was new to tarot. However, the Frugal Living guide was pretty *meh*. I'm just starting to delve into the Songwriting and Sewing volumes.
Yes, we like the For Dummies books quite a bit at Chez Dork. ;-)
