[Poll #1196284]

As pointed out by [livejournal.com profile] shsilver, it's Mel Blanc's 100th birthday. So a special poll (since it has also been pointed out that I never look at the calendar).

You can also comment here if you wish on your favorite Mel moments. I have to say that it is either Jack Benny's car, or Sy ... as much as I love either of the above in the poll.

edit Oh, and they did a special animation for a Warner Brothers gag reel, which they would show at the annual Christmas party. If you haven't seen it, go do a search on Porky Pig gag or some such thing on You Tube. I can't get to You Tube right now, so if someone finds it, please put the link in comments.

Sy is wonderful. And catching MB on the old Jack Benny Show was wonderful, especially when a familiar voice comes out of him unexpectedly.

Sy? Si! And at least HALF of the humor in it was Benny's reactions!

Taken on the whole I'd have to give it to Bugs, solely due to the fact that Chuck Jones, bless 'im otherwise, really fucked up the ol' Duck. Daffy went from being daffy to just downright vindictive and evil (witness all the godawful Daffy & Speedy cartoons). Early to mid-era Daffy, while still vain and self-righteous, had many precious moments - way too many to go into - but when he was daffy he was very very Daffy. And when he was not, it was painful to watch. This is a real bee in my bonnet.

Bugs, while temporarily domesticated in the few shorts with Clyde, still managed to be the ol' stinker, even in the 60s TV years. The 70s movies don't mean much to me, the stock in trade was the 40s shorts, primarily under Clampett. "The Big Snooze" is just unreal (in many ways!!!!)

DAMMIT, I WANT WB CARTOONS ON TV **NOW**, UNCUT AND UNCENSORED!!!! WHO'S WITH ME?!?!?!?!?!

(breathe....breathe....)

/tim gets out his copy of "Who The Hell is Mel Blanc", Mel's mid-60s audition tape and gives it another listen.
/6 minutes later...

Okay, plenty of lines I like are gone.

Not sure where, but probably as Yosemite Sam, Mel was asked for a sound effect of Sam drinking his sassperalla. Mel, probably pressed for time, came up with "Gurgle, gurgle, gurgle".
