Ox
JPJ
Macca
Chris Squire
I'm going to slide Jaco Pastorious in here, on the strength of his work on the All American Alien Boy album.

There's also a lot to be said for Geddy Lee, bu I can't be arsed to listen to anything his band has done post-2112.

Good list again. Here's what mine would be - at the moment.

1. John Entwistle
2. Geezer Butler
3. Chris Squire
4. Trevor Bolder
5. Either John Wetton or Geddy Lee

That's who is it today anyway.

Bootsy?

Do you consider funk a different genre, then?

Hardly a controversial opinion, but I gotta throw Jack Bruce onto that list.

I forgot about Tony Franklin. Let's put him in for Jaco then.

What about Tony Levin?

I realize that my comments make it seem like I listen to a lot more prog rock than I actually do. Yes, for instance...if I were to create the track listing for a "Best Of..." collection, it would have less than five songs on it. While I have friends that are absolute Yes fanatics (the band is coming to our facility in July, so I'm going to make my boys very happy and comp them), so I've had their music around me a lot, I can rarely get past Jon Anderson's bleating about rabbit people or unicorn farts, or whatever hippie drivel he spouts. But when I do get to a point where I can stomach the material, Squire's playing is what stands out for me.

I kind of expected you to go with Phil Lynott on your list.

Guy Pratt (Pink Floyd, Roxy Music, acquaintance and therefore required to be on the list ;)
Geddy!
Chris Squire

I don't really pay attention to any others.

I notice Glover's playing mostly on his solo material, which I realise not many folks have been into ("Butterfly Ball & Grasshopper's Feast" [soundtrack for a 70's Brit cartoon - WELL worth looking for, as it contains a number of top-notch performances], "Elements", and "Mask"). And I think he did a competent (a word I do NOT use as an insult) job with Deep Purple.

I think Andes's best work was with Spirit (where he stood out on a number of tracks, the Sardonicus album sticks in my mind), but he worked well with Heart also, especially early on.

Geddy, I can understand. Squire, I like because he plays bass more like a lead instrument. Wetton I like mostly for his stuff with Jobson in UK and Trevor, I think anyway, is just amazing in Uriah Heep, especially live.

And Geezer is Geezer.

I thought about adding John Gustafson to my list. Pratt's a fine choice too.

As a bass player I would have to go with John Entwistle, and Geddy Lee from Rush is a way up there as well. Paul McCartney is good but not exceptional im my opinion. Then there is the amazing late filker and bass player Jack McGinty who gave me one of my earlier bass lessons. Jack Bruce from Cream was a big influence for me as well. Of Course Nate Bucklin is an extraorinairy bass player.

Well, when one is a session player working for other people, you kinda have to sound like the band you're playing with at the time. He's quite good when they let him do his own thing.
