Ox
JPJ
Macca
Chris Squire
I'm going to slide Jaco Pastorious in here, on the strength of his work on the All American Alien Boy album.
There's also a lot to be said for Geddy Lee, bu I can't be arsed to listen to anything his band has done post-2112.

Geddy, I don't hear him really, He fills the space, but not in a particularly spectacular way.

Date: 2008-03-28 03:39 pm (UTC)What about Tony Levin?
I realize that my comments make it seem like I listen to a lot more prog rock than I actually do. Yes, for instance...if I were to create the track listing for a "Best Of..." collection, it would have less than five songs on it. While I have friends that are absolute Yes fanatics (the band is coming to our facility in July, so I'm going to make my boys very happy and comp them), so I've had their music around me a lot, I can rarely get past Jon Anderson's bleating about rabbit people or unicorn farts, or whatever hippie drivel he spouts. But when I do get to a point where I can stomach the material, Squire's playing is what stands out for me.
I kind of expected you to go with Phil Lynott on your list.

Date: 2008-03-28 03:49 pm (UTC)Levin is someone that I tend to forget. I'm not sure if I would think of him as a "rock" bassist but more of a jazz player who plays rock.
Phil was on my list of 10 that I started with. His playing in TL is exceptional.
And yeah, that's how I feel about Yes. I can actually listen to them when I can ignore whatever Anderson is on about ... and when I listen to the lyrics, I still don't know what he's on about.

Chris Squire
I don't really pay attention to any others.

Date: 2008-03-28 04:11 pm (UTC)I think Andes's best work was with Spirit (where he stood out on a number of tracks, the Sardonicus album sticks in my mind), but he worked well with Heart also, especially early on.
