I am not a guitar aficionado (however that word is spelled :), and even I have heard of the name Les Paul. That is extremely impressive that he did the commercial, he truely is a living legend.

Being from across the pond I hadn't seen that commercial: but I still find it difficult to imagine that any guitarist wouldn't know what Les Paul looks like.
