That it may come as a surprise, but I had pretty much stopped listening to music at home. I listened in the car, I listened at work, but at home, not so much. My living situation made it tricky. (no, not the temporary situation from a few months ago, the stuff before)

I'm trying to change that now, reasonably enough considering that music is one of the most important things in my life. I have a little stereo that will also hold my IPod on the bookshelf next to where I tend to sit in the living room and my goal is, when the TV is off (which it is a lot of the time) I will put a CD in, or put in the IPod and have music on. Seems reasonable.

So, where do you listen to music most often? How to you listen to music? I don't mean the tech, I mean do you LISTEN, or just have it on, or something else.

And, what is your primary method of listening to music. Mine varies, I have an IPod, now I have a nifty little stereo, I have satellite radio in the car, I own just a few CDs, tapes and records.

And what are you listening to today? I have a Nick Drake mix on at the moment.

I either listen to the radio while commuting in the car, mp3s (mostly podcasts), or streaming audio (mostly Dementia Radio). I do also get a lot of CDs, which I rip into MP3s for my PC or car (my car can play MP3s on CD-R). I do pay attention to what I listen to, but it is rare if all I am doing is listening, the music is usually on when I am doing something else at the same time (work, drive, chat online, read webcomics)

Alas, I only listen to BBC Radio 3. I can no longer listen to any of the genres of music I play excepting professionally and analytically. I hear a piece of jazz and I listen to progressions, arrangements....the musical equivalent of lit-crit, if you like. Same with Pop and Blues and Rock etc...
Ergo....I listen to BBC Radio 3.
In general it is a classical and 'highbrow' station.
Programs of note: Composer of the Week; Late Junction (an eclectic show of music from any and all genres - a typical run might seque Gregorian Plainsong, an obscure piece of Delta Blues, A Modernist and dissonant String Quartet from the 20's, and an ambient trance-like track - it is an awesome show); building a library, which compares different versions of the classics.
Lunchtime concerts are normally pretty good too.
You can access it across the web on the BBC website.

This is one reason I fear any sort of grad school in literature: I don't want to lose my ability to devour books strictly for enjoyment, without analyzing them.

re: music
These days I listen to the radio a LOT. In my room I have only a boom box, and it's a pain to listen to CDs. While on the computer (thanks to broadband) I'll listen to the radio, too, with a wider range of stations available. I get most of my news via radio -- NPR and BBC.

Work these days doesn't allow much for music: short commute to and from, then on the phone a lot as part of the job. I don't mind the quiet, though.

When I'm writing stuff that requires significant mental effort (such as stuff I used to do for work), I'll put on CDs but limit them to stuff whose words can't distract me: no words, no words I can understand, or I know the words so well that I can listen without paying attention to the lyrics.

In the car mostly, which also determines the type of music I listen to. Very occasionally I listen to music on my laptop, today, for instance, I listened to Colleen's album "Everyone Alive Wants Answers."

As I drive to and from the station next week I shall be listening to the new Gogol Bordello album.

I have an iPod, it has a ridiculously large memory, largely filled, and I have probably listened to it about five times in the year or so I've owned it.

i own tons of CDs. i got that nifty toshiba gigabeat for my birthday, so i drag that to the truck and to class with me. i have a kick ass home stereo system... i'm currently waiting on a new receiver and then i can listen to music on it again. right now, i'm using my computer to rip music to my gigabeat, so i'm currently listening to rammstein.

I have music on in the car (though I prefer the news), which isn't very often now that I'm taking the bus to work downtown. On the bus, I occasionally pull out my iPod. I don't have music on in the background.

If I want to listen to music, I'll put a CD in the stereo and wear headphones. Laziness and a decent set of computer speakers means that I can do okay through iTunes, but I mainly use this while entering songs/CDs in my databases and/or making other comments.

At the moment, I'm watching football on tv. The Vikings won, somewhat to everyone's surprise, and the Patriots-Colts game is pretty good though hasn't (yet) lived up to the hype.

Right now I'm listening to Backyardigans. When I'm at home, listening to music, I listen to the digital music stations I get with cable. Adult Alternative and Light Classical. At work, I listen to a mix of music from iTunes. In the car, I listen to a variety of radio stations, or some CDs (usually kid stuff). In about 3 weeks, I'll be changing over to complete Christmas music!

I listen to music in the car going to and from work, and while I'm cutting the grass, which is a 3+ hour ordeal. All of this comes from my iPod. I don't listen to the radio.

If I'm in a situation where I can do concentrated listening, I usually listen for musical structure, regardless of what style it is. This is mostly at home, or at work (depending on what my assignment is).

When I listen to music at home, it's CDs in the living room, where the good amp and good speakers let me hear the full range of the music. This generally causes me to Really Listen, as I'm suddenly hearing things that I don't hear on the iPod (due either to compression, especially for stuff that I ripped several years ago and haven't re-ripped with less lossy compression, or to the substandard listening environment presented by a moving vehicle).

In the car, I listen to the iPod about 90% of the time and to NPR the other 10%.

In the office, I sometimes listen to my iTunes, piped into real speakers in the office, but frequently listen to shared playlists from my coworkers over the office network.

At the moment, I'm watching Cold Case. In the car earlier, I was listening to a playlist which is a mix of [livejournal.com profile] quadrivium, [livejournal.com profile] cadhla, [livejournal.com profile] catalana, [livejournal.com profile] vixyish and [livejournal.com profile] talis_kimberley. Yesterday, I was listening to Leonard Cohen.

I listen to music primarily in the car. At home I tend to prefer quiet.
