I love this icon deeply. HARPO SPEAKS is my alltime favorite autobio, however much help Harpo got writing it, doesn't matter. It ignited my love for the Marx Brothers and interest in the Algonquin Round Table gang for life.
We have GOT to hang out ... we really do. (I'm trying to remember if we have actually met)
I've read Harpo Speaks about 200 times over the years. Obviously he didn't write it, Rowland Barber did. As I understand it he told stories for weeks and Rowland put it together. But you do really hear Harpo's voice in it, even if he didn't do the typing.
And feel free to steal, I found the original (which was considerably longer) on a website somewhere and edited it for the use of myself and other Harpo fans here.
I taped Mrs Parker And The Vicious Circle this morning. I haven't seen it in some time and want to decide of I want to buy it or not. I'm a big fan of the Round Table in general, but Harpo, Alec and Dorothy in particular.
Yes we do need hang out, no we have not met in person yet. I'm a Los Angeles area filk fan, just getting back into it all post-divorce. Also keen on folk and "dementia". We have LJ friends in common, obviously.
Barber really did a good job on Harpo's "voice", that's a great way to put it!
"Mrs. Parker" didn't so so well at the box office, mostly I think because JJL's accent and teeth-gritting Connecticut deliver was too authentic and therefore unintellible to most of the movie audience. My theory anyway.
July: Westercon is in Las Vegas. Definitely a sign of population shift to this growing area! However, some of the major committee members are from the L.A. Area anyway. http://www.westercon61.org/
August: ConChord is in Los Angeles. Southern California filk con. http://www.conchord.org/ [All the info on the website at the moment is about this weekend's con, of course. But when 2008 plans emerge, that's where they will appear.]
September: Worldcon is in Denver. I'm definitely planning to go to this, the GoH, Lois McMaster Bujold, is at least a friendly acquaintence and I do love her books. http://www.denvention3.org/
I've been thinking about Consonance, it's the week after Marscon in Minneapolis, so that might make it tricky, but it may be too much fun to pass up (and besides, I never see Becca and Graham, even though I am in Minneapolis about every month)
I wanted to go to Westercon this year, but it didn't fit in my schedule. Las Vegas in July ... I dunno.
I might actually make a Worldcon this year, we'll see.
Conchord ... I dunno, I don't know if I can deal with LA, even just flying in and going right to the hotel. Too many years out here in the provinces.
Ah - so Mahtowa is a specific date, not a numbered weekend. I will be driving out to Denvention. I am currently planning to be there for helping wirh art show setup which I assume (yes, I know what that does) will be happening on the 5th.
I liked it the first time I saw it, but I am also a big JJL fan. I thought that it kinda skimmed things, but that is generally necessary in a bio like this.
But it didn't follow the outline for modern biopics...
-Star as a child sees/causes/thinks he/she causes the death or a sibling. -Star grows up and gets first taste of fame. -Star tries drugs/sex and becomes an addict. -Star gets married and has affairs/children out of wedlock. -Star gets over addiction/receive's spouses forgiveness. -Star lives happily ever after/dies as a cultural and national icon.
I looks to me like Night At The Opera, but I would have to watch it again to make sure ... oh the torture ... being forced to watch that movie again ...
