Rolf went to No 1 in the UK 'hit parade' when his version was released on single. His was at least more amusing than the original. Much as I love Zeppelin, that song has been so overplayed....I was sick of it by 1977 (or so I claimed as a young punk), and I've not since recovered.
You're a guitarist who doesn't like Page....blimey! Well, it's nice to know we agree on Bob Fripp. Here's a small q. What do you think are the most beautiful guitar sounds to have been recorded?
Almost all the guitar sounds on 'Abbey Road' liquid, shimmering, chiming, and golden (sounds a bit dodgy, but...). The tones and sounds on this album deserve a master's thesis...too long to go into here.
Rather than 'Red' how about the guitar line on 'Starless' - a Les Paul with the tone pots right down, a Marshall, an overdrive pedal, and a really good plate reverb.
I'm impressed by your liking of Bill Nelson.
Allan Holdsworth's tone (and most of his notes, but not the composition - which was by the keyboard player) on 'Joshua' from the album 'Secrets'.
And what about the cliches? 'Shine on You Crazy Diamond' - difficult to imagine improving on. 'What Time is Now' an edifice of rugged beauty counterpointing Morrisey's camp ugliness perfectly. The intro to 'Gimme Shelter'. Whether Keef or not (you know the story I'm sure) it has a strange beauty.
So right, 'How Soon is Now'. My bad. Don't blame you for not liking Holdsworth's oeuvre...but somtimes his tone is fantastic.
Middle section of Red. Mellotron Cello mixed with Fripp's guitar. That track is so totalitarian, it really is the music that invaded Poland. Much derived from Bartok, as is lots of Fripp from that period.

Be Bop Deluxe - Crying To The Sky - both solos (and one of only two Be Bop songs to have a solo in the middle of a song)
The Church - An Interlude - the interaction between the two guitarists is always great, but especially so on this song.
King Crimson - Red - Just because something is brutal, doesn't mean it doesn't have beauty
Lyle Lovett - If I Had Boat - His acoustic playing on this is stunning
Neil Young - Like A Hurricane - The main guitar theme that is used in the intro ... stunning
Nick Drake - Black Eyed Dog - There is a loveliness to it, but it's also very scary.
Translator - Evening Of The Harvest - The intro is gorgeous. Great thick rhythm guitar and a piercing lead.
And that will do for now. Maybe when I get home I'll go digging for more.

I'm a big Be Bop fan, Bill solo is hit and miss for me. When he's on he's amazing. Be Bop made all great albums (except the unfortunate last one)
Yeah, Abbey Road. George's tone has always amazed me.
Shine On ... yeah, just a couple of notes and Gilmour breaks your heart.
I haven't listened to Gimme Shelter in too long. The Stones greatest moment IMNSHO
Holdsworth has always bored me, so I don't know that song.
