The board of directors gave in. The homeowner says that "the board of directors of the Loma Linda Homeowners Association had apologized, called the incident a misunderstanding and had withdrawn its request for the wreath's removal."

Yes indeed, they misunderstood how much people would make fun of them nationwide.

Bob still deserves the Foreman Award.

The idea of a homeowners' association with the authority to levy fines if a person's decorations don't conform horrifies and alienates me. I feel about it like I feel about the President asserting the authority to disappear anyone he doesn't like -- it's just not possible in the America I grew up believing in. When the hell did the pod people take over?

I have pretty good second hand experience with HOA's. My father is the president of his HOA down in FL and I've had an HOA up in WI as one of my biggest customers for the last 3 years. In FL the law specifically allows the HOA's to essentially establish local law within their community. They can't break any Local, State, Federal laws, but any guidelines that they establish have the weight of law behind them. I know it's nuts. And this community in WI... they actually have an enforecable rule that prohibits a resident from putting a satellite dish on their house. It "Affects" the beauty of the neighborhood or some such crap.

Well, people typically *choose* to join HOA's, or to move into the jurisdiction of one. The lady with the wreath was a past president of the HOA, so it's certainly a government she approves of and condones... and probably either helped make the rules, or certainly enforced them during her tenure.

That having been said, calling a peace symbol "divisive" is laughable at *best*. There's a reason there's no HOA in the neighborhood we live in... [livejournal.com profile] gundo specifically chose one that didn't have an HOA.

I lived in a condo complex for a while that had its own set of rules. When we wanted to put a screened door on our front door we were told specifically what make, model, and color we had to buy. We thought that was rediculous, but we wanted the screened door.

So when we moved out of there and started looking for a house to buy the real estate agent asked us if we wanted a HOA or not. My wife and I simultaneously shouted "NO!" She was startled, chuckled, and crossed two of the homes off the list of homes she was going to show us. :)

HOAs have been around, and doing this kind of thing, since Jesus Christ was a corporal. Or at least since 1986, when I became aware of them.

Let there be peace on earth and let it begin somewhere else.
