eric-coleman.com expired last September. I hadn't done anything with it in a couple of years, so I let it go. Someone bought it in November and my old front page is there. Nothing else, just the old front page.

Aha.
Down at the bottom is a linkspam ad. They're hoping that the many many people linking to your domain will increase the google ranking of their domain, which you (they) linked to.

Not weird. Two things going on:

1) They're keeping just the basics up, probably from the Internet Archive, in the hopes that you realize it expired and contact them to get it back. I think you should do this to find out what they want to charge you. I'm going to guess $5,000.

2) They're taking advantage of the existing Google search ranking to get ad revenue.

I had that happen when I forgot to pay the fee for blindlemmingchiffon.com. I wrote to the insane people who paid money for it offering to give them something, and explaining that I am the only person on Earth who would have any use for it at all. They were not interested. My website is now blindlemmingchiffon.net.
