I need help. What would you consider the worst song (or songs) of the 90s. I'm talking terrible songs that sold bunches. Not novelty songs, not songs that were meant to be bad, or parodies or such things, Songs like The Macarena ... terrible stuff

"Give It To You" - Jordan Knight - 1999 - just...no...NKOTB should have died when they got bad in 1992
"Finally" - Ce Ce Peniston - 1991 - good song but got way overplayed
"Show Me Love" - Robin S - 1993 - same as last song, way overplayed

The problem with some stuff mentioned is that it's almost fun in a camp way. "I'm Too Sexy" and "The Macarena" can even be enjoyable.

Now, if you turn to the hits of the Spin Doctors, you're talking about bad in an entirely unenjoyable way.

So specifically song-wise, pick on "Jimmy Olsen's Blues" by the Spin Doctors.

And, see, I *love* that song. De gustibus.

As a fan of Jimmy Olsen, that song stunk to high heaven...

I saw an interview onceuponatime with the authors and performers of "The Macarena" - I think it might fall into the category of songs that were meant to be silly and fun. These were two aging Spanish guitarists who really couldn't figure out why their fun little dance number suddenly hit the charts. I got the impression that it was the moral equivalent of Leo Kottke showing up on Billboard's Top Ten.

Smells Like Teen Spirit - Nirvana (You've made it clear you're looking for individual songs and not bands, but I have absolutely no use for any of Nirvana's oeuvre)
Achy Breaky Heart - Billy Ray Cyrus
...This is harder, because I sort of gave up on pop music (as played on the radio) in about 1993 because it was swiftly becoming not to my taste anymore, and started retrenching my 80s back-catalog knowledge and collection. So I don't really know what sold better than it's merits.

Rico Suave is probably one of the first songs that popped into my head.

Ones I particularly hated:

Limp Bizkit - "Nookie"
Whitney Houston - "I Will Always Love You"
Creed - "Higher"
Extreme - "More Than Words"
Bob Carlisle - "Butterfly Kisses"
Alanis Morissette - "Ironic" and "You Learn"
Backstreet Boys - "I Want It That Way"
Damn Yankees - "High Enough"
Crash Test Dummies - "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm"

FWIW, I feel no shame in admitting I think "I'm Too Sexy" is a great song. It's one of the few novelty songs of the last two decades that reminds me of the classic novelty songs of the '70s that I grew up with. And the cute little Ravel-pop guitar solo always makes me smile...

"More Than Words" by Extreme.

Absolutely, without question, the worst song of the '90s. IMHO.
