Infilkertom and folkmew's LJs they both talked about Pete and what he meant to them.
I simply cannot remember a time when Pete Seeger was not a part of my life. I am fairly certain (and I have to remember to ask my mom) that I saw him in the early 60s at one of the many folk festivals that my mother took me to. My mother listened to his music and the Weavers a lot. I have to say that The Weavers live recordings are my favorites of his amazing body of work.
He has made his music with no compromise. He has stated his mind as he sees fit. There have been a handful of artists for whom I have nothing but respect. Johnny Cash was one, Joe Strummer another. Pete Seeger is at the top of the list by a very long distance. He is a true national treasure.
As for me, I am celebrating by listening to the We Shall Overcome live set today.

Date: 2006-05-03 06:14 pm (UTC)The prettiest sound I ever heard was Pete Seeger getting all 1500 people in the Middletown (NY) High School auditorium singing Kisses Sweeter Than Wine in two part harmony.

Date: 2006-05-03 06:20 pm (UTC)My favorite of such moments though is not one of Pete's, but a close friend. On the Don McLean live record Solo he gets the audience to do a round during Babylon. It's stunningly beautiful.
