It's been my experience, 25+ years, that merely touching someone helps a great deal. Even a bad masseur is likely to get good results if they don't do anything really destructive. If you know what you're doing, massage is great for pain amelioration; healing most often occurs when the problem is the pain (eg a headache) or exacerbates the condition (eg muscle tension). But that's a longer post.
