I used to see this couple playing out on State street every summer day. He was this big rangy hillbilly looking guy who was an amazing blues player and she was this tiny little woman who held a bass that she barely played, and that usually dwarfed her, who had this astoundingly huge voice. They called themselves the Chicago Brother And Sister Blues Band

Someone I work with saw them in New Orleans and were amazed. Bought one of the CDs and showed it to me. I hadn't heard anything about them in years but they were still amazing. I made a copy of the CD since I had no way of finding them for a copy of my own.

The person I work with came up to ask me if I still had the CD as her's was missing. I said I did and I could bring it in tuesday to copy for her.

I did a quick search to see if I could find anything about them. I found this.

DOWN BY THE BAY A blues story with all the requisite elements: love, booze and death

Apparantly in a drunken argument, Bruce killed Juliette and dumped her body into San Francisco Bay.

What a waste.

Now why couldn't you have provided a happy ending, huh?? (Incidentally, that link won't open up for me so I can't read the article...call it morbid curiosity.)

Good God I can't believe how long it's been - 13 years ago I was a summer intern at Devil's Tower National Monument (which of course is listed grammatically incorrectly as Devils Tower because of a typo when the monument was created that would now take an act of Congress to correct).

DTNM is a huge climbing attraction and climbers of all ability levels come from all over the world to scale the tower. Generally speaking, one doesn't do this alone, however, one day when I was working the desk in the visitor center I checked in a climber who gave me his card and had only his name listed for a route. The route in question is (was) a 5.10C, one of the most difficult free climbs on DTNM. I looked at him strangely and said something along the lines of "isn't anyone going with you?" He grinned at me and said no. He soloed a 5.10C (up and back down) in 45 minutes.

His name was Derek Hersey, which in the climbing world is the equivalent of a major rock star, so to speak. Brilliant, talented, fantastic climber (and a pretty nice guy). He was killed in 1993 in Yosemite while soloing another route. I was really surprised to hear about it; I hadn't thought anything about climbing much once I left Wyoming and when I thought to go find out what Hersey was up to a few years ago is when I found out he had died.

Talk about a waste - at least he died doing what he loved and didn't kill anyone else in the process.

Nope...still get the "HTTP 500 Internal server error page cannot be displayed" crap. Must be something screwy about the work system. Oh well. I think the world is not likely to come to a screeching halt if I don't get to read an article about people I never met.

HEY...are you going to be at the NYE craziness this weekend (with guitar)?

Well, if we get to see you, great, otherwise I am cogitating over driving up to Ames on the 27th (or whatever it is); Susan remembers the tattoo parlor as being non-smoking.

Cheers & Happy New Year!

Excellent!

Not to beat a dead horse/be redundant/repetetive/annoying...although I'm occasionally good at all of those...
