The key thing is a brain fart...you get used to doing something one way, and after a while it doesn't occur to you that there are other ways. Simple enough, even though in that moment she looked like an idiot.
The bike thing is a willful stupidity; people are telling him he's doing a bad thing, and its going to get hurt, and here's why, etc. and he's going ahead anyway. Because he's a dumbass.
