So ... [livejournal.com profile] cryndalae, in an unusual bit of cleverness, decided to not go out and buy me anything for FD. Smart move ... I am HARD to buy for. She instead went out and got an Amazon gift certificate for me.

So, what I got today

J-Men Forever - The Procter And Bergman cut up of classic Republic movie serials into something wildly different. Hysterically funny.
Crimson Pirate - one of the last of the great swashbucklers that I didn't have
Robin Hood - The extended dance mix Costner version ... ok ... it's cheesy but if you overlook his accent problems it really is a fun movie.

So ... I need recommendations ... I am looking for more swashbuckler films ... what I have (off the top of my head)

The Adventures Of Robin Hood
The Errol Flynn box set (which takes care of Captain Blood and The Sea Hawk)
The Three Musketeers (the 70s classics)
The Mark Of Zorro

I'm thinking I need a version of Prisoner Of Zenda, I need to check to see what is in print

Any other recommendations ???

x-posted to [livejournal.com profile] classic_film

Update: I do have the complete Musketeers and Pirates Of the Caribean as well

update two - Neither version of Prisoner of Zenda are available on DVD ... the 37 or the 52 ... creeps

So you're saying that [livejournal.com profile] cryndalae is not usually clever?

Okay, keeping in mind that i haven't seen it in years, and that it's not exactly a classic per-se....how about Pirates of Tortuga? Cute but cheesy little film i used to watch with my dad ages ago :) I do remember it having a some fun swordfights (the fencing instructor was amusing).

Another i haven't seen since i was a kid is Black Swan (i think), with Maureen O'Hara (it was the third thing i saw her in, after Quiet Man & M34 - i wanted her hair *grin*)

Flynn's Don Juan seems to be one of those 'love or hate' movies...not sure how you feel about it. Princess Bride has some SB elements to it IMO, again not for everyone....oh, and seem to remember one with Lancaster in it...*sigH* Need some research time, i guess :)

If you're willing to venture to campy side of things... you can't go wrong with "The Pirate Movie" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0084504/

  1. The Princess Bride
  2. The Great Race actually has some good swashbuckling sequences (in the Prisoner of Zenda sequence)
  3. For the Lester Three Musketeers, I expect you'll also get The Four Museketters. Unfortunately, the third film in the series (Return of the Musketeers) is not available on DVD
  4. Pirates of the Caribbean
  5. A Knight's Tale (although somewhat cheesy)

Cutthroat Island is one of my personal favorites. Yeah, it sucks in many ways. But it has incredible sets, action, costumes, action, Gina Davis, action. If you could turn off the words but not the music it would be perfect.

Depending on how you want your swash buckled...
The Ice Pirates
Horatio Hornblower (and tv series)
The Sea Hawk (surprised you missed this one)
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World
Robin and Marian
Beau Geste
The Pirate (Judy Garland and Gene Kelly!)
various Pimpernals and Cristos

You managed to reply to an incomplete post I deleted and rewrote (below), so I'm going to respond here:

Well, I liked Ice Pirates. Especially the Backwards Buckleswash at the end.
Beau Geste is desert and not water, but felt like a gritty enough battle to count.
I recommend the Patrick O'Brien books in general. M&C:tFSotW covers books 3-10, so you can read the first two and get the feel of the characters without ruining anything (though it doesn't: The movie leaves out a LOT, but gets most of it right).

Again, it depends on what you're looking for. One of my favorite hand-to-hand sea battles is a small sequence in the Japanese horror film Kwaidon, which I recommend for other reasons.

Sorry. Usually, just hitting the Back button takes me back to my original screen and I can edit and repost (dunno if you get another e-mail notification), but this time it got lost and I posted three times. Ooooh, I'm such a perfectionist.

Kwaidan (he finally spells it right) is a series of four Japanese horror stories that are beautifully photographed. You could watch it with the sound/closed captioning off and just sit back and gaze at the marvelous backgrounds, makeup, costumes and sets. The stories are presented very slowly and deliberately. More a creeping horror than a screamfest, all the stories are well done. Hoishi the Earless is the best told, but Woman of the Snow is just gorgeous. I don't recall which one has the sea battle, but at one point a horde of samurai leap from small boat to small boat, hacking and battling away amid the fog. Short but swashbuckling.
