I have in fact come close to driving off after pumping gas.
I usually pay at the pump. Occasionally, I want a soda or something, so I plan to go in and pay/get tasty snacks. But by the time I'm done pumping the gas, I've spaced that. The beeeeeeeeps remind me to go in and get a snack.

Here in New Jersey we're not allowed to pump our own gas. The complex mechanical workings of a gas pump are too much for most people to handle so they just outlawed it.

If you want to talk stupid NJ laws... take a look through the books to find out why you have two license plates on your car. To paraphrase since I don't have the reference material handy. It's there in case you try to escape from the police by going in reverse.

And the gas pumping thing... some whack job politician believes it creates jobs so they banned self service. Although even with Full service only NJ still has some of the lowest gas prices in the country.

That's really funny because about a month ago I got pulled over for not having a front license plate on my car. Someone hit me while I was parked and knocked it off.

I know we are lucky with gas prices, although when $2.05 is considered cheap I think it's time to start riding my bike to work. It all evens out, though, because we have some of the highest auto insurance rates in the nation.

The beeping is part of the widespread assumption in our society that you're nothing but a petty thief.

If there's one thing i detest without reservation about modern American society, it's the Panopticon - the proliferation of security to prevent shoplifting and other theft.
