ericcoleman: Cheshire Moon (Cheshire Moon)
Just a reminder, we are live this Saturday!

Tell your friends! Tell your enemies!

We are going deep this weekend, stuff we rarely play live. We will be including a Mike Whitaker song, and if I get the nerve, you may actually hear me sing a song!

These shows are always silly, loose, and a lot of fun!

There are a couple nifty tip rewards, and we're trying to think of more!

So, come listen to us play, and help us pay off the amazing amount of medical bills that have hit us the last few weeks!

We are not going to be traveling much this year. England took a lot of our travel budget, and we're moving this summer. Now if only there was some way to play for people without spending hours in the van. OH WAIT!

Yeah, there is this thing that we haven't done in over a year!

Written by the marvelous Shawna Jacques.
=======================================

It is winter, and the sun has long since set. It’s a clear, chilly night. A silver, sliver crescent of a moon, luminescent in the inky sky, grins mischievously down on the forest clearing. It’s an infectious grin, and even while it makes you shiver, you can’t help but smile back.

You hear cawing in the distance, and you feel something twining around your ankles. Startled, because birds that speak that particular language are usually at roost and sleeping this time of night, (and where even did this fat grey cat come from?!), you look around. There are crows mysteriously EVERYWHERE. On the road, in the grass, in the trees. The fat grey cat looks at you, chirps, licks her paw, and looks up at the sky.

You follow the fat grey cat’s gaze, taking note of the fact that you’ve seen a cat without a smile, but a smile without a cat is a most curious sight. You watch another cat, an enormous, very fluffy tabby cat appear around that lunar dentation. His fur shifts between hues of all possible colors, and his grin widens even further as he espies you. The cat jumps down to the ground amidst a flurry of black feathered beings as they make room for the enormous Cheshire cat (for who else could this cat be?). Social protocol for dealing with Very Large Felines being not well-established, you bow to the grinning beast. He seems to bow in turn, his eyes luminous and unnervingly yellow-green, until you realize that there is a man climbing off the cat’s head.

He is dressed in vivid swirling colors, shifting much like the cat’s coat, and there is a guitar strapped to his back. Before you can respond, one particularly animated crow swoops down, lands, and shifts into a brown, curvy, curly haired human form, dressed in deep jewel tones and black, a bow and blue fiddle in her hand. She winks at you, and turns to the man, her gaze sharp and fond.
“It’s a Cheshire Moon tonight, my love.”

“It is, indeed. But perhaps we should bring this person along?”

“Ah, yes. Hello. I am Lizzie Crowe, and this is my husband and magician Eric Coleman. We’ve come here to sing. Are you here to listen?”

You nod, somehow at a loss for words, and sit down on a nearby boulder. Several crows settle on and around you.

Lizzie raises her voice. “Come one, come all! If you’re here to listen, we will play!”

You look all around you as people and creatures of many sizes, species, and types appear, some out of the forest, some out of thin air. A girl with a fluffy russet tail with white fur at the tip sits down next to you, her large, soft, pointed ears twitching at the sounds around her. She tilts her head at you, a curious expression on her round face.

“Do you know them?” she asks.

Your eyes wide, you reply, “No, but I feel like I should!”

“You’re going to love them!”

Lizzie tunes her fiddle as Eric tunes his guitar. Then Eric grins and inclines his head toward his trickster wife. “Shall we?”

As the enormous cat meows agreement, the man settles his guitar solidly in front of him, and strikes a chord. The crow-woman plays a haunting introduction on the blue fiddle, and then she begins to sing, weaving voice, guitar, and fiddle into otherworldly panoramas and eery epic tales of heroines, legends, warnings, and wings. She sings of goddesses and gods, good queens and wicked princesses, wicked queens and goodprincesses, good witches, bad witches. She sings of crows, the flock joining in raucously on the chorus, and before tonight, you’ve never seen an enormous cat dance.

You don’t want them to stop, but all creatures must rest, and the wonderful pair finishes the last song for this fantastically strange night. The crow-woman, her fiddle and bow safely stowed, nods at you, winks again, and dons her cloak of feathers once more, settling next to the large cat’s left ear. The man climbs back aboard, and with one powerful leap, the cat launches himself back into the sky, and suddenly you are alone in the forest clearing again. You wonder if you’ll see them again.

The full moon rises, and the Cheshire Moon does not reappear.

Some days pass, and it is now the first day of the second month.

You hear a cawing in the distance…

... kinda crazy. We had an amazing time at CokoCon, the write up is below.

The Maximum Ames Festival Sept 28 @ Little Woods with Ryan Sheeler & The Coffee Committee - 6pm

OVFF Oct 19-21

We will be at The Abzug Ampitheater in Champaign IL Nov 17 7pm.

The British Filk Con - Feb 1-3

And Cokocon ...

Whaddaweek …
We got going on time for the first leg of the trip. Oklahoma City. The drive through Iowa, Kansas and a bit of Oklahoma was kind of quiet. There were a few lovely vistas here and there, but mostly we were just enjoying being together.
Day two, things picked up. In western OK and the top of Texas you can see for miles and miles and miles. That makes thunderstorms even more amazing. Very high clouds, and enormous lightning strikes. It was breathtaking.
We stopped for lunch in Amarillo at The Big Texan Steak Ranch & Brewery. Yeah, it’s filled with western kitsch, but the food is amazing.
We moved on to Albuquerque for night two. The scenery got more and more interesting as we went along. Huge cliffs around us, just beautiful.
I do have to mention what became one of our favorite websites … whatismyelevation.com
I had some issues going over a couple of 7000s, so we kept close track, just to see where we were.
Day three we got going stupid early, and stopped at the Petrified Forest. The initial north part of the drive was a little daunting, it’s a long way down on one side, but it was worth every bit. gorgeous vistas in every direction. Lizzie posted a bunch of photos on her page.
We wanted to stop at the Meteor Crater as well, but I was having problems with my breathing, so it was time to go down.
And down we went, over to Flagstaff and … DOWN!!! It was an 18 mile 6 degree downhill run. Pure terror. I will never do that again. We found a better way back up, but more on that later.
Lizzie got more and more emotional the closer we got to Phoenix. She was born in Tucson, and hadn’t been back since she was 6.
Thursday night was kind of a blur. We got loaded in, and went to bed kind stupid early.
Which led to getting up stupid early, Lizzie at 4, me at 5. We went out, played a little bit of music to greet the dawn, then off to breakfast, and then back to bed.
We wandered, chattered with people, got baby fixes. Edward Pulley showed me around the hotel a bit, more on him later.
Our first panel was the getting ready for your first performance workshop that started back at a Musecon, and has shown up here and there over the years.
There was a Jam Session that ended up being open filk pretty quickly. We played some songs, heard a lot of people we hadn’t heard before. It was wonderful.
Saturday I got to talk about sound and lights with Gerry Tyra, who knows a lot more about it than I do. It was fun, and the audience seemed to dig it.
There were concerts from Jennifer Horning and Callie Hills, both of which were wonderful.
Then it was off to Meet The Guests. We got to hang out with Harry Turtledove, who was a hoot, Beth Cato, who was wonderful, and Steve Rude, who was, well, I don’t know. I got into a bit of fanboy squee there, I love his work on Nexus. L Edward Pulley was the moderator, and kept things going on the rare occasions that we quit talking. There was a whole lot of laughter. Lizzie charmed the room. It was wonderful.
Then it was sound check, and our first show of two. I talked about this elsewhere but it deserves saying again. We don’t hit that sort of high in a show unless we get a lot of help from the audience. Thank you everyone for singing along, clapping along. Thank you to the two who came up to add some drums on Strength In Fire. The audience was so much of the reason why it as that good of a show. In the words of Marie Browning … it’s better when you help. We got stuff back to the room, went to the open filk for a little while, and then went back to the room and collapsed.
There was a bunch of stuff Sunday. Lizzie had a vocal workshop. After that was the Instrument Petting Zoo. We set up the gear for our show later that afternoon and let folks play with what they wanted. It was lovely.
The TG Geeks had us up for for a fun and silly interview, which will show up sometime in the next few weeks. They have the best geeky “meet cute” story we have heard in a long time! tggeeks.com
Our show that afternoon was much more low key. The only thing plugged in was Lizzie’s violin. Her acoustic fiddle had broken a string earlier in the weekend, and we didn’t have extras. There is video that I am going to go through in the next week or so. Some of it should end up on FB or You Tube.
After that was Mark E. Horning’s concert. Cool stuff, some of which I knew, a lot of which I didn’t. Oh, and I have serious Baritone Guitar Lust (BGL) now.
We had a songwriting panel that ended up pretty esoteric, but was a lot of fun.
We escaped the hotel for a couple of hours and had dinner with a few of my old High School and College friends. Much laughter was had, scurrilous stories were told.
Lizzie had one final panel Monday morning. Our original plan was to take off after the Dead Dog Filk began, but we looked at travel time, and decided to leave as soon as we could get the van loaded after the panel. We didn’t want to pull into Albuquerque at 11. There were final hugs. Final baby cuddles.
The trip back was lovely. We didn’t go back through Flagstaff. Instead we took 87 up through Payson, then over to Snowflake and up to Holbrook. There was one several mile area with a nasty drop off to our right, but only a bit, and it wasn’t bad. The funniest thing, it seems that there is a lot of camping done up that way. I’m guessing we saw 10+ miles of backed up traffic north of Payson. Miles and miles of bumper to bumper parking lot. I resisted the urge to wave at the other side of the road. Just as well, probably woulda gotten me in a bit of trouble. The drive back was uneventful. Other than those first few hours, we took the same roads. Stayed at the same hotels (having a King rather than two doubles was nice at one, we refuse to sleep in separate beds). So it was quiet time with just the two of us, one of our favorite things. We got home to an intact house and clingy kitties.
We have so many people to thank. I will try to not forget anyone. First of all, Valerie Ritchie for recommending us. Thank you for making a trip of a lifetime possible. We have had some marvelous adventures as a couple, this was one of the best!
Thank you Gary Swaty and the Phoenix Filk Circle for making it possible for us to be there!
Thank you Hal C F Astell & Mark Boniece for running such a great con. First year … amazing! It went so well.
Joseph A Gaxiola and Edward Pulley for taking such good care of us through the weekend. We have got to hang out with you more!
And everyone who came to our shows, came to the workshops we were on, sang along, clapped along, and who just sat and talked to us and made us feel so welcome, so warm (ok, the weather may have had a bit to do with that).
We have had some wonderful adventures as a couple, as a band. This was one of the best.
Thank you everyone, so much.
p.s. If I forgot something, remind me and I’ll add it in. A lot happened through the weekend

All we need to do is get it duplicated, we will start that process tomorrow.

Tomorrow everyone from Patreon and those who pre-ordered will get an email with a link to the mp3s. It's not too late to pre-order! There is a link on the website, cheshiremoon.net.

Discs will be sent as soon as we have them, probably about 3 weeks. Please listen to the new versions, and please let us know what you think.

#52songscheshiremoon.

Thank you everyone who has been so good to us during this process, and through the last 7 years. You are a lot of the reason why we do this.
ericcoleman: Cheshire Moon (Cheshire Moon)
And it's done, really done!

More as the weekend goes along!
ericcoleman: Cheshire Moon (Cheshire Moon)
Originally we wanted the CD out in time for the Chicago/Champaign weekend. I got sick, so that didn’t happen. Then Demicon, but other bits of life got in the way. So we finally got into the studio. Every week it looks like this will be the weekend where we release the MP3s to the Patreon and pre-order folks.

Mixing issues, since it always takes awhile. We added a track last week, and have to get in for one more vocal. If you haven’t read Lizzie’s FB page, and it being FB there is a good chance you haven’t, there was a nasty storm yesterday, just ending as we were supposed to start recording.

So, maybe Friday for the last session. Maybe.

Iwanttogetthiscddonedammit!
ericcoleman: Cheshire Moon (Cheshire Moon)
We were waiting on one more thing!

We're going back into the studio Wednesday to track a quick vocal (really, it will take more time to set up than to record), and the CD will be done!

We're going to try very hard to get mp3s up this weekend for Patreon and pre-orders. The cover is done, so all we need to do is upload everything to Diskmakers.

You can still pre-order the disc on our website and get a listen to it before it's officially released!

We need another listen through, but I think we have a final mix!

It's not too late to pre-order the CD. Doing so will get you MP3 DLs of the songs, maybe this weekend!

And a real quick set at the Masquerade Saturday night. There were not a lot of entries, so the judging went very fast.

We got to the circle a bit late, and were pretty burned out by that point but we played a few songs.

Disenchanted
Sleep No More
Critters (with Beth & Justin on drums)

It was a lovely weekend. Really, really what we needed.

Now we are off for a few months (there is a chance of one show later this summer).

Time for some relaxation. Time on the bikes, time at the pool. Time together where we're not traveling.
ericcoleman: (Default)
It's been such a manic few years, and we never seem to get caught up. We didn't realize how the pressure of writing so many songs last year affected us until January, when we had a month to write a song. It was weird.

We're only booking a few more shows this year. Something up in Minneapolis. Another Chicago show, a Champaign show and probably a Des Moines show in the fall. And I think that may be it for this year, unless something really nifty pops up. I look at what we have done, and what we have planned, and it looks like 12 shows this year. This will be our least busy year since our first year as a band, when we played 7 times.

We're still working on the new rehearsal space and the new demo studio. Sales from the new CD will help with that, and we're still looking for more pre-sales for the new CD. We're only about halfway there.

We'll be at Demicon in two weeks and that is all we have at the moment until Phoenix, Labor Day weekend.

And starting Labor Day weekend ...

3 GOH slots in 6 months. We're both still amazed, and mildly terrified. We have so much to do. So many older songs to get comfortable in again, so many new songs that we need to learn to relax in. We need to have the OVFF set list planned out soon, so we can present it to the folks who are playing with us, so they can learn the songs.

And we need rest. We need time to not be burned out. Work has been hard, health has been a problem. Money is always tricky, but it is for everyone.

So, some quiet time. And let's see how I deal with not playing as much. It's kind of necessary for my existence. We'll see ...
ericcoleman: Cheshire Moon (Cheshire Moon)
Music Walk is always fun. You get a lot of people for a couple of songs, then they move on. We got nice applause. I got to instrument geek a couple times. There was an adorable toddler who liked the music, but thought that the big guy in tie dye was kinda suspect. Smart kid!

Recording tomorrow. Still trying to get more preorders. We're about halfway there.

I found myself, a mere mortal surrounded by Goddesses.

One was an Amazon Warrior whose weapons were keyboard and bass and a voice that could be heard through all space and time.

The next was a wizard of the wires, keeping the magic flowing from our hands to the world. And then she would pick up the bass and lay down sly grooves.

Third, a beautifully mad creature of the desert and mountains, the imparter of darkly whimsical secrets with voice and bow.

Then the trickiest of all the pixies and the keeper of all the mischief, showing us the way.

And myself, sitting in the midst of this musical maelstrom, strumming at my strings and beating on my drum, hovering between bewildered and bemused.

Much mischief was done. Many truths were told. This must happen again. Both delightful and mildly terrifying, this is one of those moments that I live my life for.

Oh, and we played songs. So many songs.

It's time!

We have just a little bit of work left to do on the new CD, so we are starting to take pre-orders. The plan is to release it at Demicon in May. Pre-orders are essential this time around. Thanks to the generosity of our Patreon Patrons, we have the money for the studio time, but do not have the money to press CDs.

This will be a mostly acoustic, duo CD. 15 songs, all from last years 52 Songs Project.

Children Of The Flame
Gargoyles of New Orleans
Gatekeeper
Mamaw's Kitchen
Nachthexen

There is a Paypal link on the website, $15.00 postage paid.

Should be go over what we need to press CDs, the remainder will help us set up a better home demo studio than we have at the moment. We need some new hardware and software.

If you don't have access to Paypal, send us an email at cheshiremoonband at gmail and we'll work something out!

Full length CD #4, who would have thought it?

13 of the 15 songs done. Lead Vocal, Guitar, Craviola, Harmony Vocals, Violin, Mellolin, Mandola, Hand Drums.

We ended up dropping An Affirming Flame, we just couldn’t get the arrangement right. It will show up on a later CD. We added Gatekeeper instead. I think you’ll like it.

We have two more songs left to record, and will go back into the studio on the 7th to finish everything off.

Slice Of Infinity
Solstice

If all goes well, the new CD will be out at Demicon May 5-7. We will start pre-orders this weekend. Studio time is paid for, but we still need to press the CDs. If we get 90 pre-orders, that pays for the pressing, and gets us some gear we need to make our home recording studio better.

Oh, and we do have to thank Bryon Dudley of The Spacement & Nova Labs for taking such good care of us this weekend. More shenanigans will be done there!

The weekend

Mar. 5th, 2018 12:28 pm
ericcoleman: Cheshire Moon (Cheshire Moon)
This weekend was a big step forward.

Except for a few moments, I had given up singing since about 2011. I have gotten up with Toyboat a couple of times. I have done FPN in music circles and such, but mostly I had stopped singing.

Some of it was, I am in a band with an incredible singer, my voice wasn’t really necessary to the proceedings. Some of it was, I was concentrating so hard on my playing. Techniques were changing.

Also, the voice I used for almost a decade was, well, kind of specific to what I was doing at the time. A little harsh, a little staccato, definitely a comedians voice.

I do sing on a couple of songs on Crowes & Consequences, but I was not happy with either. I did those songs live occasionally. But I wasn’t happy with the results. (except for, maybe, some of the live versions of Corvus)

The last few months we have been working on some backing vocals from me. I’m also working on one of the Callenwood songs, and will work on more, since there needs to be a male voice on a few songs.

And a lot of progress has been made.

This weekend, I sang with Cheshire Moon, for what I feel, is the first time. I’m getting a much smoother sound now.

Definitely steps in the right direction. And there will be more as time goes along.
ericcoleman: Cheshire Moon (Cheshire Moon)
Little rough yesterday in places, but it's been awhile since we have played live. The new songs went wonderfully.

We got to do the best version of Solstice so far. Lots of people with drums, lots of people singing along. As Slim Browning would say, it's better when you help!

Here’s what we did!
