I went because Dr D was going to be there. He offered me some stage time, gave me two songs even though he had only played one (still). Then it became dementia music central, and the most fun weekend of music every year (although Mahtowa and Duckon compete pretty strongly, but in wildly different ways)
Iowa
I grew up here, I moved away, I came back, I desperately want to leave again, but, due to the WSPA, I am here for 10 years. It's a nice place to be from
Music
I have a soundtrack in my head. Sometimes it's something I am listening to, sometimes it's something I am working on, but I always have music going.
Guitar
I never really wanted to be a guitar player, but I couldn't come up with anyone who would write what I wanted for my lyrics. Not exactly true, I found the perfect foil once, but he vanished on me one day and I didn't see him for 20 years. So I bought a guitar. I seem to be stuck now.
Toyboat
Bunch of degenerate miscreants. (yeah I know that's redundant, shaddup). My experiences in bands have been ... interesting ... as may you live in interesting times interesting. As a drummer I was marginalized, even then I was writing a lot of lyrics, all of which were ignored. It didn't help that I was a terrible drummer. My punk band Jim? was fun, but problems that at least one member of the band had made life tricky. Soldiers In A Field was the best thing I did musically up to then, but personality conflicts (I had one, he didn't) made it tricky, and the proverbial "artistic differences" finally broke us up. Pity, we did some good stuff. There are other bands in there, but they are, well, not really worth mentioning. Toyboat, as a band, has no ego. Toyboat, as individuals, have no ego. We're there to play. It's the best time I have ever had playing in a band, maybe the best time I have ever had playing music.

Date: 2009-06-18 06:15 pm (UTC)Re: bandmates, my experience has been that: if you have a choice between working with musicians whom you cannot stand as people but are technically brilliant, and those whose skills may be lacking somewhat but you get along with like gangbusters, ALWAYS go with the latter. The music you make may not be great but you will enjoy making it all the more, and that will show through to your audience.
An acquaintance of mine in an act that played the KC RenFaire had left said act citing "artistic differences". His explanation of these differences amounted to "They suck. I don't."
I've been lucky. I get along just fine with my two very talented bandmates. We sometimes have disagreements, but they are always resolved in terms of what works best for the group as a whole.

I started doing these because about half the people I was hanging out with at the time were doing Bristol, and I got hooked; I think mostly because I saw how much fun these people were having at it. I had no idea how tired it made one at the end of day, though. Only young Ren participants do any partying when the day is over - us oldsters just don't have the energy.
Filk:
For a long time I was not interested in Filk because the Filks I went to when I first got into fandom consisted (with few and welcome exceptions) largely of lots of people doing very sleepy songs at a very sleepy time of night badly out of tune. I suspect the affordability of electronic tuners has made a big difference in the latter factor. I wish I could afford to get to more cons so I could do more of them nowadays; there are so MANY talented people to hear and the energy level has gone up considerably since twenty years or so ago.
songwriting:
I find songwriting to be difficult to get started on, but once I get a concept going on a song it practically writes itself. I am nowhere near as prolific as most of the songwriters I know.
music:
Not very many species do music. Humans, a few birds, whales, some insects. Music is the closest I get to any kind of spirituality. I think it does a pretty good job (for me, anyway). My Mom sang around the house all the time, and my sister was studying music in college when I was little. I used to sneak into her room to play her classical records until I got my own phonograph around the age of 13.
12 string guitar:
I always loved the sound of the 12-string but didn't actually play one until I bought the one Brian Leo (Tinker of Molly & The . . . ) had on the Faire circuit for many years. I loved how strongly the sound punched out there, especially in the outdoor venues we mostly play. Sometimes it's a challenge for anything else to be heard over it (like bagpipes). It's also a challenge to keep properly tuned (like bagpipes). The 12-string sounds twice as good when it's in tune and four times as bad when it's out. I also find that melody played on the 12-string doesn't carry NEARLY as well as chords.
