Stick your tongue out at the record companies who rob us of good music, rob us of cover art, rob us of value per dollar (i buy a 2 hour movie for 20 bux with scads of extra bonus stuff but i have to pay as much for a 45 minute cd of CRAP?!? (nb: this is presuming i'm buying the cd out of the top 40 bin at wal-mart and not direct from the artist at a con... ;) )) And they now decide that it should be illegal to rip your cds to mp3 format?

meanwhile both W and Hillary (mentioned for their high profiles) have publicly admitted to having Beatles tunes on their iPods which means CDs HAD to be ripped somewhere along the way...

I'm greedy, I want both. BUT, no place to find needles to play the vinyl that I'm aware of. Obviously, the CDs travel easier.

oh i posted the wrong article but not by much. the dude referred to is being sued for SHARING the files but the argument was still made in court that merely ripping is also illegal and while I have not torn their site apart looking for it, I am let to believe that the RIAA maintains on their website that ripping is illegal. This is not supported by actual specific law but if it's upheld in a court case....

Cite the law that has come from that argument ... or quit passing on BS.

This woman was found guilty of sharing files, not of ripping songs for herself.

This goes back to people saying that taping an LP should be illegal. And it has yet to happen.

Read the correction at the top--the company was apparently claiming that it was illegal *not* because the buyer ripped to mp3 but because the buyer put the mp3s in a shared folder on a peer-to-peer network.

I don't doubt some people in the music industry would like to make ripping to mp3 illegal, but I see no indication here that any actual moves are being made in that direction.

wow...i corrected myself just in time to NOT save myself a flamin' ;)

the article mentions Jammie Thomas yes, but the court case I am referring to and mentioned in the article is not her but Jeffrey Howell. She did lose her case (mostly cuz her attorney was WAY less effective as the RIAA's were--the technical considerations in the case would very likely have gotten her off if her lawyer even knew what they were...)

"They" = record companies and RIAA. and "Should Be" does mean it's not yet, but nevertheless being argued in actual courts.

Extension of this sort of "logic" would also make it illegal for public libraries and copy machines to exist.

After vacation in two weeks (okay, after that *and* after I've finished my office/studio/guest room redo) I'm going to start on the great Vinyl-to-MP3 experience. I cannot wait to get some of my stuff (like that Dory Previn) on the server so I can enjoy them more, and share them with Daniel.

*wiggle* I love vinyl! CD's have made a lot of things nicer and easier, but nothing will ever replace the joy of looking at an album cover & reading the back side and the inner sleeve after gently lowering the needle onto the record. Love, love, love. I remember my first experiences with albums like "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Thick as a Brick", and "The Beatles", and part of the love was the whole album experience.

CD. Because in an emergency you can smash a CD in half and presto! Instant edged weapon.

Well not really that easy - found out the hard way once that CDs are tough and take a good boot stomp to break them in half. But the resulting shards were pretty sharp.
