There is a friend of mine who is a producer in LA. We both used to post on a now mostly dead message board. I got an email from him some years ago apologizing for not being around, but he had, as he said, "been in the studio with Paul". Years later I he was still giddy about it.
They were working on the demos for the album that came out about 5 years ago (I think, my grip on time is a little sketchy) and he said that he had never worked with someone who worked so hard. Paul was in early every morning, drove himself, no entourage and worked everyone till they dropped. My friend loved it ... said that he could go ahead and quit now since it wasn't going to get any better than that.
