I was looking at the Myspace service, and they take a BIG chunk of the money, something like 40% in the end. I hadn't thought of CD Baby, I'm going to take a look at that tonight.

I think I figure it out. Why are CD sales down?

Record store just don't advertise anymore. If labels and stores don't advertise, how do you think we will hear about the music?

CD sales are down for face to face sales, like Marscon.

The day of the album is going away, the day of the downloadable track is taking over.

I really like CD Baby. They take only $4 off the top regardless of price. The service is more personal. I'm selling on Amazon too, but they gouge your profits mightily.

No, the MP3s you get 91% of the sale price. It's $4 off per physical album.

I'm not sure about the cylinders but 7 inch records are still quite popular and if you go to the right good will you can get a record player that the needle still works.

CD Baby not only can still sell your CD and sell your download but they will also be your distributer to Apple iTune,Europe iTunes,Canada iTunes,Japan iTunes and rhapsody as well verizon, & napster.

You get money for CD downloads,single downloads, and even when someone just listens.

yes i brought up this point recently on both this group and on a folk list. i got a few weird answers and some really good ones. but generally, i agree, the cd format is slowly dying.

for the near future, we're going to have to keep making cds *and* doing digital. we got into a discussion here in LJ about duplicated vs replicated, doing shorter ruins of cds instead of 1000, etc. prices of replication have mercifully come down of late, so at least doing a reprint of another 1000 isn't going to break my bank (especially if i end up having to reprint 2 projects at the same time), though it will still jam my garage full of boxes for a while!
