There is a box set of old Popeye cartoons that I just picked up. They look amazing. I do like the disclaimer that appears at the beginning of each disc

"The animated shorts you are about to see are a product of their time. They may depict some of the ethnic, sexist and racial prejudices that were commonplace in American society. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While the following shorts do not represent the Warner Bros. view of today's society, these animated shorts are being presented as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as claiming these prejudices never existed."

And ... SciFi is starting a new Flash Gordon series on Friday. I'll toss them onto disc and see ... but I rarely have hope for such things. Oddly enough, I was out looking for the late 70s Flash Gordon cartoon series (pointed out to me by [livejournal.com profile] eeknight) when I found the Popeye set, which, like so much, I had forgotten about.

They forgot to mention the inaccurate portrayal of Sailors...or the false depiction of the powers of Spinich...or that smoking will kill you before you can light the match....Or that having a beard does not make you bad...And there's no such things as 'Goons' or 'Sea-Hags', who may also find it offensive...Or that kidnapping women is not good.

I am glad, however, in the Underdog cartoon DVD set, they did not digitally remove Riff Raff's cigar...

As for Flash Gordon, nothing to look forward to on that. The DVD for the movie just came out. Go get that and you will be happy. If you thought I was mad about Transformers...

I am a fan of the late 70's Flash Gordon cartoon, which is wonderfully on DVD and is a great homage to the comic. Great special features on those discs.

The New Flash Gordon should be called, "The Adventures Of A Guy Who Happens To Be Named Flash Gordon"

When I heard that Ming is just an evil water merchant, I about shot myself.

Did you like the 70's cartoon? Here's a clip:

And that the Hawkmen would have no wings, just a group of guys that like birds...

I'm the same, I just also love the movie. I think it's the premise of three people fly to another planet and have adventures while tryng to get home is sweet.

I also loved Buster Crabbe's cameo on "Buck Rogers"

Here's70's Flash Gordon. It's awesome:

Now that's a disclaimer for and by people with their heads screwed on right. "I yam what I yam" and he was and it all was and that's the truth.

I'm surprised that the Underdog cartoons ever saw the light of day again. Okay, he takes a pill and he thinks he can fly... Drug Humor Alert! Bzzzzt, thanks for playing. I'm still waiting for the Underdog movie to get to cable so I don't have to pay extra for it. Shudder, My youth just got raped, again.

i have always felt that to be true. Say that it's wrong, you know it's wrong, it was wrong then and it's still wrong now, but if you edit it, then you deny that prejudice exists, and that's also wrong. You can't correct wrongs with more wrongs.

it was evident to me when i started noticing the Tom and Jerry (and Bugs Bunny) cartoons being edited. Of course, i didn't realize that i was learning incorrect racial prejudices from my cartoons, i thought i was watching a cat and mouse beating up on each other, and occasionally there'd be some fantastically out-of-date reference to times long gone. But i guess racial prejudice never goes out of style.

anyway.

But it's OK for WB to totally rape and slash up their own output to appease network standards and right-wing "children's television advocates"...The level of editing and revisionist tweaking they've done to their classic cartoons in the last 35 years, and particularly the last 15, is nothing short of appalling. I've not bought any of the WB DVD sets for this very reason, I want to see the gags as they were presented ("Well - Now I've seen everything!" POW thru the head) and let me worry about whether it's harmful or not. I'm not gonna spend $60 for a set of altered toons (thank god for YouTube or else I'd never have seen "All This and Rabbit Stew" and "Coal Black and de Sebben Dwarfs"!)

This is a hot-button subject for me, I am passionate about WB cartoons. Can ya tell!!!!!!!

then I'm sold. I'll go to Best Buy and ask them if I can take the set home, and gladly pay them Tuesday! Are any of the war-era toons with Shorty on there? Stoked for this one.
