Some CDs

I picked up a couple CDs when I was at Windycon. Some quick comments

Tom Smith - Live At Marcon
I am a firm believer, as much as I like Tom's studio stuff, that live is the way to experience him. I now have this and the GaFilk show on my harddrive here at work, and I really think this is the better of the two (but only barely). It's available at tomsmithonline.com, like many on my friend's are not likely to know that already. The best thing I can say about it, it severely hurt the Moose on the drive home. He now regrets not having seen filkertom in concert. Go buy it now. Buy the GaFilk show too. You got any more of these Tom ???

Nate Bucklin - Water Over The Bridge
I have only had one listen to it, which is certainly enough to know that it's great. Nate's songs amaze me. I will say, and this is hardly a secret really, but his secret weapon is really Louie. For the record I want to say to her ... the production is superb. More on the CD after I get a few more chances to listen to it.

Just wanted to point out that there's a nifty new live version of "Cthulu Fthagn" on Tom's MarCon CD, featuring me. It's much better than the version that's on "Worst Album Ever", mainly because by then he and I had it memorized and had been performing it at a lot of shows since 2003. :) I highly recommend it as well.

A true Lukeski Moment ^tm is a malleable thing. It is a moment of self promotion. Optimally it will lead to some sort of monetary gain, but an indirect gain can also be the end result.

Eric, Louie and I want to thank you sincerely for the praises. Louie did *so* much for this album, and it's good that at least one person we respect (which you most emphatically are) feels it worked. I'll be glad to hear your further comments when you're ready to make them. (I've got a CD of yours to which I should respond, too. Maybe in a couple of days.)

It was very good sitting in the circle with you at WindyCon. I really appreciate the "filkier" (is that even a word?) of the people among us, but you and we were the people in the circle whose stuff overlaps between filk and "mainstream," and I think I'm glad Louie and I weren't the only ones. Perhaps we'll jam with you again at some point in here. It would be great if you were inclined to come to Minicon! (Five months from now? It feels like forever! Sniff, sniff, cry, cry....)

The circles in the Chicago area are always the best filk circles I see every year. A lot of good musicians and a lot of good singers. Many places I have been the last couple years have had a lot of good voices, but almost no one who plays an instrument. I've come to really love the community and a lot of the individuals in it. The overlap thing has been a problem here and there, but the Chicago crowd is very welcoming.

Road tripping next year is going to be tricky as the wife loses her job as of the end of the year and a lot depends on when she becomes re-employed. I don't know if I can add a new con to the list seeing as how I am probably going to have to subtract several Minneapolis is a little easier since I generally have a place to stay (one of my best friends lives in a nice central location near the highway). I've never been to Minicon, but I have been thinking about it for a couple years now. Depends on money.

I go to Marscon to play at the Dementia Showcase, due to the Dr Demento connection, but even that seems a little tricky this year.

Convergence will probably be out this year as I want to make it to the Winnipeg Folk Festival, which is generally a week later.

Even the Chicago cons are going to be tricky, I might not even make it to Duckon, which is a continual favorite.

We'll see how it goes.
