Songs

There are some things that I can deal with never hearing ever again. Right now I have several Deep Purple albums on shuffle. I have removed Smoke On The Water from the list. I don't need to hear it ever again.

So, what are those songs for you? I have bunches, some more of which I may go into in comments.

Now is this because you've heard them too many times, or because some emotional attachment makes you retch every time you hear them?

'Cause as far as overplay is concerned, if I never here Ben Folds' "Army" again, I'll be thrilled.

And as far as emotional attachments go, early Bauhaus sends me into general panic attacks, and anything by the Doors just makes me nauseated.

Aaaaaack, "Army" is one I can listen to over n over n over n over n over n over!!!!!!!!! :-) it's also great fun to play bass along with, Sledge got me interested in playing again...Oh vell!

When it first came out, the local indie station LOVED it. Loved it so much that they played it at least once an hour. And the psycho chick I was working with freaked out if anyone touched her radio. At one point they played it, and then played another song, and then played it again! I called the station at that point and told them. They tried to insist that they'd not played it in the last two hours. So blame it on Lightning 100.1 Nashville. :)

Uh, oops. That was me on Luke's computer. Doh!

American Pie
Hair of the dog
Crazy train
Lazy day
Ferry cross the Merzy

The last two are on shuffle play on the muszak at the store I work at part time.

Which "Lazy Day" - Spanky & Our Gang or the Moody Blues?

[identity profile] qnofhrt.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
The former. It's an innocuous song but gets stuck in my head.

My daughters have recently discovered "American Pie" and love it.

Overplay-wise, mostly songs I've heard done to death badly at karaoke bars:
Paradise By The Dashboard Light
Love Shack
Picture
Anything from the "Grease" soundtrack
American Pie
Total Eclipse Of The Heart
let's just save some time and put anything by Meat Loaf on this list, come to think of it
I Will Survive
The Rose

So yeah, basically anybody who goes to karaoke and chooses to sing a song >5 minutes long should be taken out and shot. NOBODY CARES. Also there is a serious dearth of male/female duets that are even slightly worth listening to.

On a personal note, I had to remove "The Great Unknown" by Dar Williams from every playlist I possess, because listening to it makes me want to punch her.

For me it's not so much a matter of songs themselves, but musical "styles" which offend my ear more. For example, I love the song "Hooked On A Feeling", but not the best-selling annoying version of same (see below).

I never need to hear any disco song again. I didn't need to hear them the first thousand times.

"The Wild Rover" - When anyone does it, they say, "I never will play The Wild Rover no more" - and in their next set, there they go again playing it! But I don't so much mind doing "Wild Rover Blues".

Anything as performed by Blue Suede.

There is one song, though, that is beyond the pale. That was done in the 80's by someone calling herself Charlene, "I've Never Been To Me". Basically claiming that a woman can't be truly happy unless she raises children. Written by two men, one of whom died a few months ago.

As a side note, I would love to do a take off on Smoke On The Water, going from the riff into the theme from "Sex & The City" - there are enough notes in common to make it hilarious if done right.

I try to pay as little attention to them as possible.

Better than their original name, Blobbus!

I can honestly say I can listen to just about anything. I can't think of any songs I detest enuf to never listen to again. I might appreciate a break from them for a day or so, but after that ...

[identity profile] tlunquist.livejournal.com 2008-09-12 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Paradise by the Dashboard Light.

A guy who lived a few dorm rooms down from me one quarter played this particular opus on his tricked-out dorm room stereo system at least 10 times every day for eleven weeks. I am SO DONE with that song.

I'm also pretty much all the way over everything ever done by Whitney Houston. I'm just not into the whole scenery chewing thing.

"Never hearing ever again" is too long. I generally measure songs by how frequently I can stand hearing them. American Pie is a great song, but I only need to hear it about once a year. Similarly Stairway to Heaven or any of the overplayed hits. I listened to Steeleye Span a great deal in college, and there are cuts I listen to now and again but mostly I've internalized their first ten albums (with solo LPs as well).

The flip side are the songs I want to hear again immediately. I nearly made a mix tape of songs played twice in a row. The Lion Sleeps Tonight (either Tokens or Robert John) still tops the list. Little Willie was on there too, but I'm over that now.

I digress.

I love the Tokens version but HATEHATEHATE the Robert John version - the tuba kills it for me.

I don't know that I can answer considering that I just bought like twelve remixes of One Night in Bangkok off of itunes last week. LOL!!!!!

I don't know how you can tire of "Smoke On The Water". Glover and Lord are just gods on that song.

After spending a year in a college dorm when it was first out I could easily go the rest of my life without hearing the Doobie Brothers' "Black Water" ever again. The same goes for REO Speewagon's "Ridin' The Storm Out" - for much the same reasons.

There was a time where I never wanted to hear anything from Dire Straits' "Brothers In Arms" just because it was sooooo overplayed when it came out. But I think I could probably handle it now...maybe.

If you're avoiding 'Smoke' I might suggest avoiding anyone learning to play the bass guitar. I think it's a requirement to learn that first. :)

My music taste is pretty varied, so I can't think of anything right off hand that I would avoid, but 'Never Been to Me' that another poster mentioned here would go right in the bin, along with 'Afternoon Delight,' of songs I loathe.

Hrm...anything by The Eagles. Overdone, overblown, overrated, overdue. Still good, but enough already.

Y'know, I suppose that if every copy of "Walk Right In" by the Rooftop Singers suddenly got erased/deleted, I wouldn't feel too bad...

"Lipstick On Your Collar" by Connie (uhhhhh, Francis? Stevens?) and for that matter, "Kookie, Kookie (Lend Me Your Comb)" by Edd Byrnes & Connie Stevens, the first hit single on Warner Bros Records. What a start....

"Endless Love". "Everybody Have Fun Tonight". "Run Joey Run". "Angel Baby". "You're The Inspiration" (or just about anything after Chicago 16). "Joy To The World". "Elvira". "Achy Breaky Heart". "Celebration". Friggin' Madonna. God, someone stop me...
