If you're avoiding 'Smoke' I might suggest avoiding anyone learning to play the bass guitar. I think it's a requirement to learn that first. :)

My music taste is pretty varied, so I can't think of anything right off hand that I would avoid, but 'Never Been to Me' that another poster mentioned here would go right in the bin, along with 'Afternoon Delight,' of songs I loathe.
