I've had root canals and as unpleasant as they are (I could write a book on my bad dental experiences) they've not been as painful nor as long-lasting in either painful symptom nor in expense as those whom I've witnessed who've had kidney stones.
But neither would definitely be my choice. Cake or death? Cake, thanks so much.
Root canals are performed under anesthesia and when the procedure is over, it's over. Kidney stones, not so much.

Uh...I've had 3 root canals and while there was local anesthetic used, when it wore off, the pain returned. Altho I've not had kidney stones, <lj=unclekage> has and indicated (in a hilarious story) the pain only begins when the anesthetic wears off. So I'd say they're both pretty darn painful.
Having had a root canal and gall stones and having been told that gall stones are nothing close to kidney stones (I've got one of those too, just haven't passed it) I'll take the root canal, thanks. The anesthesia worked great for me.
