I got pissed off at Jones a few weeks ago - I try to avoid all soda that has HFCS in it. And I had been buying Jones, because it advertises Real Cane Sugar on its boxes. I happened to run my eye over the ingredients label and it said "inverted cane sugar". Having no idea what that was I looked it up - they basically take Cane sugar, and muck with its chemical composition and turn it into something just like HFCS.
*sigh* - Now I am looking for Boylans, and Izzie wherever I can find them.
I have to admit that the preference was from way back when I was drinking soda regularly and not paying attention to HFCS. I just liked the Sprecher better. Now I probably wouldn't drink either.
I've never tried Sprecher, I take it, it's good from the responses so far. Will check BevMo, they have the extra-regional brands on a regular basis.
I'm more about the diet drinks of course, but Aspartame makes me ill so it's Splenda only. Boylan's when I can get it, Hansen's the rest of the time.
One of my Evil Minions was pining for Barq's during a long year in Qatar, I shipped him a six-pack. Yes, it was a daft gift and the shipping costs were outrageous but it made him happee.
Anyone here had a chance to try Sparky's? It's a very small operation in California, so it's rather hard to get around here. It's a bit too sweet, but even so, it's REALLY good.
A few years ago, I went with a post-con crowd to the Ram brew pub in the north suburbs, and I thought the root beer they served there (Big Horn) was the best I'd ever had. I bought a case and it was equally good; I thought it was much better than Sprecher's and I do like Sprecher's. (This was a few years ago, before I'd been exposed to Sparky's or really any microbrew root beers other than Sprecher's.) But some time later, I got another case and it was... disappointing. So until I manage to figure out if they screwed up the recipe or I just somehow got a bad batch, I can no longer recommend it.
My husband introduced me to Sprecher way back when HFCS was not a consideration. I now drink diet (splenda) products when I drink pop at all. Our Costco has Sprecher and has it in the mini metal kegs which makes it fun for parties.
I haven't tried Sprecher, or heard of it until now...
My favorite Root Beer is on tap from Tom Wahl's in a frozen mug - that's how they serve it there. The burgers aren't bad either. http://www.tomwahls.com
When you're passing thru the area, stop at Amana, and eat at the Ronnenburg - their local root beer is the best I've had :-) (I don't know, but suspect the Ox Yoke may serve the same stuff). It's brewed at Millstream Brewing Company (http://www.millstreambrewing.com/)

re: Jones
That's what I get for reading ingredients but not doing research into the unfamiliar ones.

"neither, they're neither one of them worth emptying out the bottle to have something to pee in."
