Please, a moment of silence.

There are many of you who have roomed with me over the years. I've always been a bit promiscious about who I share with when I am on the road. So many of you have seen the same sight over the years. So hopefully many of you will appreciate this, and mourn as I mourn tonight.

For many years my choice of sleeping attire has been a pair of green light cotton shorts. They don't bind, they move when I move. As someone who likes it darn cold, they aren't heavy. They are perfect.

These have traveled all over the midwest with me for much of the last decade. I don't remember when I got them, just that they have always been there for me.

But the years move on. This year they started to fray, the waistband started to get a little loose. I felt that it was just a matter of time before my kids, and those many friends who I room with on the road, would start to complain that, well, they were learning too much about me.

The problem is finding another pair that would do the job. They were made by Basic Editions, which, with a few moments online today, I found were a K Mart store brand. So off to K Mart this evening I went. I didn't find this same style, after so long I didn't expect to. Instead I have a pair of light cotton shorts made by Joe Boxer. They're a little long, but they have pockets, I wanted something that I could feel ok about wearing if I wanted to take the garbage down to the curb. I don't know if these will do the job, but I know that they can never fill the void in my heart. Nights will not be the same. There is a sadness in my house tonight.

So please my friends, find it in your hearts to have a moment of silence for my poor fallen shorts.

RIP Michael Been

This one hurts, a lot. He is one of my favorite songwriters and so far beyond one of my favorite singers. The twice I got to see them play continue to live amongst my favorite concerts. RIP Michael Been.

Les Paul

Geeze, how much of my life has been spent walking on the road you paved. Thank you so much, there are generations, and generations yet to come who have so much to thank you for.

My mom

PHYLLIS YOUNG HOWREN
Phyllis Young Howren, 69, of Chapel Hill, NC, died January 26, 2007, in her home of metastatic breast cancer. She was born in Clendenin, WV, on January 13, 1938, to Madeline Cromwell and Henry Young. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Robert Howren.

With a PhD in linguistics from the University of Iowa, she joined the UNC-Chapel Hill faculty in 1978, teaching students in the Reading Program and offering courses in English as a second language for international graduate students. Remembered by hundreds of foreign students for her dedication and kindness, she personally helped many through the difficulties of adjusting to American life. She also invited ESL classes to her home to celebrate American-style Thanksgivings. As a volunteer, she taught English to members of Chapel Hill's Latino community.

During her studies and travels, she lived among the Dogrib Indians of Canada's Northwest Territories and the Yucatec Maya of Mexico. She retired from UNC in July 2006.

She is survived by her sons, Wim and Eric Coleman; four grandchildren, and many close friends.

Instead of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her memory to the Susan G. Kommen Breast Cancer Foundation, 5005 LBJ Freeway, Suite 250, Dallas, TX 75244.

Walker's Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
